There must be some irony in the fact that the current favorite "pizza wines" around our household actually come from Spain. Las Rocas and Mas Donis are two Garnacha-based affordable reds that have proved to be versatile choices that we find ourselves going back to again and again, even if I do occasionally get the two confused.
Everybody should have a few wines that are interesting enough to pair with pastas and red sauce, lamb, beef or salmon but that are also cheap enough that if they aren't exactly the perfect pairing you're still not afraid to twist the cap and drink them. My girlfriend is always afraid to open bottles while I'm out of town with my advice for fear of drinking some collector's item I'd been saving for a special occasion. That's why there's usually at least one box of Picpoul de Pinet "La Petite Frog" in our fridge at all times.
Both Mas Donis and Las Rocas are readily available at many wine merchants around town, and you can expect to pay $12-$15 per bottle. At those prices and considering their versatility, consider buying a case.
