Sometimes it seems like a new restaurant dominates all the news on the culinary intertubes, and lately it's been Taco Mamacita. But they've been hard at work earning the buzz. Most recently, they've come under the critical eye of La Señora Zorro (that's "Fox" in Spanish) in the latest issue of the Scene.
Now the proprietors of Taco Mamacita have started to attract throngs of patrons for their new Two-for-One Margarita Wednesdays. From 4 p.m. until closing, both the El Vez and the El Camino margaritas will be available for you to double your pleasure and double your fun (and, apparently double your definite articles). Be sure to try their special formulation of crushed ice that simulates the good parts of a frozen drink without the constant annoying scream of a bar blender. From all accounts, Wednesday nights have been slammed, so get there early.
Their low-cal Skinny Margarita is not part of the two-for-one deal, but in my experience, the new version of the Skinny Marg is much better and a whole lot less syrupy sweet than the original formulation that Taco Mamacita served in their first few weeks. There's still a little Splenda aftertaste, but I think it would make a great second or third margarita if you want to conserve some calories for queso fundido instead. Personally, I'm impressed that they have been working consultatively with their patrons to develop this odd drink, and wait staff has been instructed to check with every single person who orders one for their opinions and recommendations.
They also listened to comments from patrons who weren't especially appetized by the "Durty Sanchez" sign over the bar and took it down. Apparently it was a misguided homage to the bar they replaced in Chattanooga, Durty Nelly's Irish Pub. After a quick Google search, they decided it was probably inappropriate and I think they deserve props for listening to their customers. There's still a big portrait of "Sanchez" on the wall, but one step at a time. ...
The other bar news of note is that Taco Mamacita has switched their seasonal mojito from elderflower (St. Germaine liqueur) to a kumquat version that was absolutely delicious, even if you're not a big mojito fan. The citrus tartness of the kumquat complements the mint in a totally unexpected way. I was afraid it would be like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth, but it was excellent. If you're not there for the margarita deal, check out the mojito.

you threw me for a loop with the "La Senora Zorro" reference - I expected that to be a comment from Elzorro's (hopefully mending, always beloved) wife.
Indeed! I was so shocked by the headline I was thrown from Trueno, my trusty steed.
And SL, Ms. Zorro is doing well, thanks for asking.
My one true wish these days is that my first born is birthed in time for me to have one of the aforementioned beverages on my birthday.
Due on 2/27, turning twenty-nine on 3/4. This little dude will have a major timeout if mommy can't FINALLY have a margarita by her birthday.
Taco Mamacita also just announced via Facebook that Sundays will now be "Sangria Sundays" with half priced glasses and carafes of Sangria.
Also, I have to disagree whole-heartedly with Carrington's drink reviews. On three separate occasions myself and my dining companions had the elderflower mojito and none of us thought it was too sweet. We all agreed it was deliciously dangerous, and just right. The strawberry margarita on the other hand....well the one time I had it, it literally made my teeth hurt and I couldn't finish it. Not a fan of that one.
Regardless, so far I'm a big fan and plan to frequent the place!
We tried the Skinny Margarita for the 3rd time this past weekend in order to break the tie - good the first time, too sweet the second. They got it right again on the third try, it was refreshing with just a touch of sour.
I have had both the Strawberry and Skinny versions and loved them both. Although not historically a traditional margarita kind of girl, I made the exception with the Skinny Marg because of the Splenda. That alone helped me justify the chips and dip!
There are just not enough drinks made with kumquats. Looking forward to a kumquajito on the patio.
Dinner there tonight. Thirty minute wait stretched to two hours, but once barstools were commandeered, no problem. Then the food came out lightning fast - two hour wait, dinner from start to finish 25 minutes. So that was funny. We didn't love the skinny margaritas; three of us had them at three different times and none of them tasted the same as any of the others. Regular house margarita was fine; that odd crushed ice puts it somewhere between rocks and frozen.
The food was fine (and cheap for the vibe of the room) - we had that Peruvian chicken thing and then four different tacos. If they can get their beer thing worked out where they just have regular old PBR in a can, this could be a pretty cheap night out.
