Loaded with tofu and seasoned with nutritional yeast, Tiger Food -- a '70s health food holdover revived from the old Slice of Life restaurant on Division Street -- does seem like the unlikeliest fond food memory. But that's the power of cheese and tamari.
Viking's cooking classes got more cheers than jeers -- if you missed the discussion, go add your two cents' worth.
Chris' post on the bibulous trends of the past 10 years brought out the fruit-flavored, Red Bull rants in some readers, while Carrington has culinary deep thoughts in her post, wondering whether local food favorites would make better partners for wine than could-be-anywhere bar food. Do Nashville bars need more sliders? Why not Tennessee ham on yeast rolls?

Any idea when Burger Up is opening? I tried to call them but the number has been disconnected. I've been wanting to try it out.
Don't know anything about Burger Up, but the Half-Off Depot has $20 gift cards to Gabby's Burgers & Fries for $8. Including tax and shipping, it's $8.99.
Had the house belly and mozz cheese pizza at city house last week. Waitress suggested an over-easy egg and let me say it was the best pizza my wife and I have ever eaten. The cinnamon brioche and mascarpone gelato was almost as great. Also was fun sitting at the chef's bar was fun watching Tandy and the other guys work.
This may be old news, but I heard La Hacienda on Nolensville Rd. is closed due to a kitchen fire and won't be open for another 3 weeks or so. Had to get all new equipment in the kitchen.
Anyone else heard about this?
The last time I talked to Miranda, she said Burger Up was going to open in mid-January. Of course, I've covered hundreds of restaurant openings over the past nine or so years, and they virtually all open later than originally predicted.
A few months ago it was noted that El Manajar in the shopping center at Bell Rd/Nolensivlle Pk had closed down. Well, another mexican place has opened in that location: Fogatas. I picked up a 'to go' menu, and while I only ate at El Manajar once, it appears to be mostly/exactly the same items. So I'm thinking it's essentially the same place but with a different name?
BW, I did see that about La Hac on the news and drove by this week. They are frantically working on the front of the building. Looks like new electrical too.
Hope they're back open soon.
Is everyone going out to support Nashville Originals Restaurant Week next week? Friends and I are going to F Scott's one night, and hubby and I may go to Yellow Porch another.
My sister, brother-in-law and 7 year old nephew are coming into town next weekend and they want to go out to dinner one night. I don't have kids so I have NO EARTHLY IDEA where to go. What good local restaurants are kid friendly? Any of the Nashville Originals? None of the usual places I frequent will work....
I'd love to try out a few places for restaurant week (I'm pleased by the places that are offering vegetarian options), but our babysitter leaves Sunday. Boooooo.
We spent the last night before bringing Baby Eats home looking for a place that was open and not crowded and ended up at Suzy Wong's. They still had the pumpkin cheesecake wontons, FTW.
Beth - try the Piped Piper eatery for a kid-friendly atmosphere. The menu is creative but simple; it consists of mostly of sandwiches, homemade soups, and breakfast (served all day). They also have daily specials. One of my favorite eats on the east side!
We've eaten at Fogatos several times. It opened 11/18. There's been some re-decorating, it has a new owner, but the same food and workers as El Manjar. We think it's terrific. Have been there a couple times with a group from work for lunch and the food & service is great!! It's a favorite. Everybody go and support them.
Just throwing this out there...
Went to Past Perfect on 3rd Ave last night to eat before the symphony.
The restaurant was so dark inside it was tough to read the menu.Service was slow---real slow. Our bottom floor table was getting colder by the minute.Menu options are sparse.Thought that porterhouse was an odd cut for a steak option.Food was pretty good though and faily priced.
Any recommendations for a good meal near the symphony---I'm going back Thurs.
Had the burger from the late night menu at Sunset Grille Saturday night. The burger was great, but the sweet potato fries left more to be desired.
Beth, my kids favorite treat is Kobe Steaks or any Japanese steak house. They do love Mafioza's, too.
Okay, totally my fault- I should have been more specific. My nephew has loads of food allergies, so he can only order a plain burger when he goes out. No bun even. Just a patty and some fries. They live in a town that doesn't have many great dining options beyond chains, so my sister and brother-in-law would like a fairly nice meal.
I was thinking maybe Bricktops or Tin Angel-does anyone know if they would frown upon children? We'll be going for an early dinner- probably 6 p.m.
My kids have only been to brunch at Bricktops but they were warmly welcomed and there was a kids menu. I was somewhat surprised to find that Park Cafe has a kids menu (see their website). I went there for my birthday a couple of years ago---our sitter had fallen through last minute and they were VERY accomodating of my then three-year-old. I'm not as familar with restarants catering to food allergies.
