Berry Hill Berries Buried

As of next week you'll have one less place in Berry Hill to buy your grapes and grain as Berry Hill Liquors & Wines goes out of business. That would reduce residents' options to...none?

According to the proprietor and neighborhood fave, Mr. Lee, the rent just got too high, and he could no longer justify the business model. Regrettable as that is, Mr. Lee's loss can be your gain as he sells out his inventory over the next few days. Shoppers who purchase four or more 750 ml or larger bottles of liquor or wine will get 30 percent off until supplies are gone. Mr. Lee is scheduled to stay open until Jan. 15 or the exhaustion of his inventory.

If you see a Silver Camry hybrid with a bike rack on the back of it in the parking lot, you'd better hurry. Or kindly get out of my way.

None, except for the two in Berry Hill on 8th avenue south?

I never know where the borders of Berry Hill are. My dad used to go rabbit hunting there when there literally still were 100 oaks.
It also occurs to me that Nicki also drives a metallic Camry that often has a bike rack on the back, so be doubly careful.

They've opened a new liquor store in the Kroger shopping center (the most logical location) on 8th. I could see how Mr. Lee might not be able to hang on. I always loved the dog in that shop (not so much the dog hair) and talking with the woman at the register (she always had something bordering on total lunacy to say).

Yeah, who knows where Berry Hill ends and Melrose begins? Though I'd been meaning to check out the new liquor store next to the 8th Ave. Kroger.

Don't complain to anyone in the general services district with NO liquor stores to be found.

The liquor store next to Kroger is more expensive than any within a one-mile radius, which was surprising to me and other shoppers. I suppose you pay for the convenience. Colonial has good prices if not the best selection and very friendly staff. Hoyt is selective but very fairly priced and I support Vinea because I like the people, they carry my favorite current wine and I can walk there.

"I never know where the borders of Berry Hill are."
As a city editor once told me (in a not so mild mannered voice), "If you don't know, look it up BEFORE you turn in the story."
...which leads to short history lesson. (I've read this in a couple of local history books and presume it's accurate.) Berry Hill was organized primarily because the people who started Colonial Liquors could not get a liquor license from the city of Nashville. They therefore got the local politicians and merchants together and incorporated the tiny city of Berry Hill (its only about one mile square). The same day (or a day later) the officials of the new city awarded a liquor license to Colonial.

Melrose, by the way, is the name of the neighborhood and has no official boundaries. The name comes from the old Melrose Theater and long before that, the historic home "Melrose" which stood where Woodlawn Cemetery now is.

Chris is right about the Camry with bike rack, but we're still iced in here on Ozzie and Harriet street. Sledding, snowmen.
And Henry's right about Berry Hill -- organized to allow liquor sales. It's pretty ironic that it won't have liquor anymore. Does it still smell like cigarettes, and have a crusty old carpet? This impending vacancy might be the moment to address those issues.
