America Runs From Dunkin'?

Doughnuts in the workplace can be dangerously tempting. The last time I ate one from Dunkin' Donuts, I enjoyed its cakey texture.

Either the recipe changed, or we are spoiled here in Nashville by Krispy Kreme and Donut Den, or it was a bad batch, but ... yuck. The Dunkin' Doughnuts that appeared in the kitchen at work were chewy and dry, made from a yeast dough that trapped big air bubbles, leaving the texture around the bubble dry and tough.

Dunkin' left the midstate market, then returned a couple years back. Maybe there was an infrastructure change -- something different about distribution or logistics. The disappointment seemed widespread -- the box of doughnuts sat sadly on the counter for most of the day.

Maybe this was just a cruddy batch of doughnuts, a fluke. It's been so long since I ate one that I'm calling on you experts to explain what happened.

Any Dunkin' fans out there? Aren't the cake doughnuts usually more moist and appealing?

I grew up eating these back home. They were always bad. I believe that terrible crust is a trademark.

We had some Dunkin Donuts at work last week brought in by some salesman. They languished in the break room. Another day somebody brought in donuts from Shipley's. They were killer.

dunkin donuts are completely different. they are designed to be "dunked" into your coffee. that is why they are dryer than the donuts you are used to.

I know I surely Run From Dunkin'! Please give me Krispy Kreme if it is donut day. However, I have not yet tried many of the local places like Fox's and Shipley's - I'll get to them someday!

It must be a regional thing. Our family is all from the Chicago area, and we loooooove Dunkin. I prefer it over Krispy Kreme or Shipley's any day of the week.
The pumpkin cake donut was to die for!

Having grown up w/ DD in NJ, I must say that the few times I've had them in Nashville they have not been good. Not sure what the deal is, but the one's in NJ are MUCH better than the one's here. Though I do love a Shipley's donut as well. It's really the coffee that gets you into DD, the donuts are secondary.

My husband--a Southern boy through and through (who does not drink coffee)--loves cake donuts and would pick DD over KK every time. I live more in the Krispy Kreme camp--I want 'em yeasty and glazed or powdered or filled.
The last donuts I ate were from the Donut Hole in Destin, and they were on par with Fox's.

When is Tim Horton's coming to the south? I need a "double-double" and some Tim Bits!

The Dunkin Donuts shops in the northeast are far superior to the locations here in TN. I also hate that the DD down here have the combined Baskin Robbins/DD - you rarely see that up in New England. I must say, most people I know go there for the coffee and not necessarily the donuts.
I grew up in RI, where there is a Dunkin' on almost every street corner. I do have a soft spot for the place. Munchkins were THE treat to get for any school birthday party growing up. I love those things. Mmm. I've never thought that the donuts were totally amazing, though. However, KK can be, dare I say, *too* sweet for my tastes sometimes. I do like Donut Den.

I grew up with Krispy Kreme being a super special treat. The nearest place to get them (before they sold them in gas stations and grocery stores) was an hour from our home, in Louisville, KY. It wasn't until I was at least 20 years old that I first tried a Dunkin Donut. BLEEEECH.
The first (and pretty much only) cake donut I've ever really REALLY liked was from GADS. Any other WKU alums out there? GADS is Great American Donut Shop in Bowling Green, KY. Off the by-pass, open all night, hideous wall paper.

Ha, too funny Erin, we used to go to GADS but I don't like donuts, so I can't really weigh in! I know, I know. I'm a weirdo because I don't like donuts...
But I will fess up. A few months ago after a few too many cocktails, I got talked into trying a donut at The Patterson House (they're really holes) and I have to say, they are totally, completely, sinful and yummy. Try them dipped in your Stingy Brim and you'll be very happy.

Anonymous makes a good point about the dunkin' of Dunkin Donuts. We had this same epiphany with coffeecake last week -- there's a reason it's meant to be eaten with coffee.

My relatives in the Northeast who live near a Dunkin' Donuts go there exclusively for coffee and bagels. (The real deli isn't as close.)
Having said that, while I'm a Krispy Kreme gal, when I lived in Chicago, the nearest KK was 10 miles away and the Dunkin' Donuts was about 100 yards away. Do the math.
So I did eat a fair amount of Dunkin' over the years, and the doughnuts were always good.
