Save a Horse, Feed a Cowboy

Apparently the grand opening for the Flatrock Cafe (located at 2624 Nolensville Pike, BTW) went swimmingly. According to the comments even dogs were welcomed on the outside deck by the friendly employees at Flatrock.

The owners are in fact animal lovers. One thing I neglected to mention in last week's post, besides the darned address, was that a portion of the proceeds from the opening party went to the care and recovery of the Cannon County horses who are currently being housed at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. From all accounts, most of the horses seem to be on the mend and volunteer turnout has been remarkable.

What they do need however is food. Not alfalfa hay; that has been well provided for by local farmers' donations and the good folks at Tractor Supply. According to Eric and Katie over at their excellent food blog, it's human food that the volunteers need.

Edited to add: A little birdie told me that Amerigo on West End has stepped up to feed the volunteers tonight. Kudos to them and their GM Doug Hogrefe. Hopefully even more local restaurants can help out this effort.

Organizers of the volunteer effort are asking if anyone in the restaurant or grocery business would like to donate some food and/or water or soda to help out the people who are helping these horses. If so, they should drop Val a line at Avalonfarms@hughes.net.

So pony up, readers and restaurants. Let's see if we can help these people out.

If this isn't enough to guilt you into action, they've moved seventeen starving dogs taken from a trailer in east Tennessee to join the horses in recovery
