Portland Brew, the six-year-old coffeehouse in the 12South neighborhood, was shut down by the Tennessee Department of Revenue today.
The door to the cafe was locked and chained, and a notice said the business was being closed for nonpayment of taxes.
The closure may not be permanent. In many cases, restaurants shut down by state tax agents reopen within days. A message posted on Portland Brew's Twitter account around noon said: "Nashville keep cool. We'll get this figured out. We appreciate your patience and your loyalty. You'll be in the know as soon as we are."
The cafe's owners could not immediately reached for comment. Portland Brew's other location on Eastland Avenue in East Nashville was operating normally this afternoon. Employees said they had no knowledge of the tax case.
Portland Brew is one of the best-known coffeehouses in Nashville. The original cafe opened in Sylvan Park in 1999. It closed several years ago (that space is now Local Taco). Another Portland Brew location on Murphy Road was sold recently and reopened under new owners as Dose Coffee and Tea.
The shuttered Portland Brew at 605 12th Ave. S. opened in 2003 and was one of the key businesses of the 12South revival.
