Fans of Jason McConnell's two restaurants in downtown Franklin, Red Pony and Sol, rave about his fresh guacamole. Just in time for holiday parties, McConnell has launched a product he claims will give home cooks similar results.
Jason's Guac Starter come in jars and contains tomatillo, lime juice, serrano peppers and spices. The idea is that all the customer has to do is mash two ripe avocados, combine a half-cup of the starter, and holy guacamole, there's a bowl of fresh, festive dip for holiday guests.
The product is available at the Franklin Farmers' Market, Grassland Market and Whole Foods in Green Hills. An 11.5-ounce jar costs $5.50. To really guac out, order a four-pack for $20 at jasonsguacstarter.com.
McConnell, a Culinary Institute of America grad and Tennessee native, did a stint at F. Scott's before opening his restaurants. Red Pony, which came first, is a casual fine dining spot emphasizing local ingredients and contemporary Southern cuisine. Sol, which opened two years ago, is McConnell's homage to authentic Mexican fare.
Both restaurants have made a big splash with foodies, and Red Pony was recently chosen to host the environmentally sensitive epicureans at Slow Food for the group's fall dinner.
