I usually order Diet Coke when I'm out for lunch. Possibly my generation is influenced by the John Belushi sketch on Saturday Night Live, but personal experience confirms that places owned by Middle Eastern people seem to offer Pepsi more frequently. Or anyway it happened when Chris and I went to Fat Mo's for a burger.
I'd be interested in how other people receive the news that Pepsi is your option. Do your shoulders drop in disappointment? Do you switch to Sprite? I feel a slight thrill, actually, because I prefer Pepsi. True, it lacks the strong vanilla waft of Coke that goes so well with Jack Daniel's fine Tennessee-made bourbon. But it's lunchtime, and the slight bitterness from the cola nut has more personality, the slightly less sweet flavor profile and the carbonation level go better with food.
Now if Snapple or Jones sodas were available, this discussion would be moot.

If there's no Coke, I get tea; I'd take an RC before I'd put a Pepsi to my lips.
I've been having breakfast once a week lately at Nashville Biscuit House on Gallatin Rd and the only thing I don't like is the Pepsi products.
I'd rather go without a beverage than drink Pepsi. It always tastes like they got the syrup/soda mix wrong. I can't take the chemical taste of diet drinks, either. If I accidentally end up with Pepsi or diet, I can't bring myself to drink anything beyond that first sip.
Luckily, I'm more of a Dr. Pepper drinker, and Mr. Pibb tastes pretty darn close to the original.
If no coke/diet coke, I have water. And my grandfather use to own a pepsi plant in a small west tennessee town!
I don't think it's a Middle Eastern thing...just anybody operating on a shoestring trying to make a buck. I remember when Martin's BBQ switched from Coke to Pepsi because it cost a lot less. The last time I was there, however, he was offering both. Even Costco is having a problem with Coke pricing and no longer selling it. Personally, I go both ways.
Dr. Pepper is what I usually drink out of the fountain, and only then. I never buy it in cans or bottles. Maybe because it's not a very good mixer.
I'm weird that way.
I got a bunch of Diet Coke at the Nashville West Costco last week.
I can really drink either one without an issue. I always preferred Pepsi, until I gave up all sodas one year for Lent. After Easter, I tried drinking Pepsi again and found it waaaaaay too sweet. So I went back to Coke. Now my tastebuds have adjusted again though, so I can do either one. But I don't do diet ANYTHING, except Diet Dr. Pepper.
Barbara, I think it just came out yesterday or the day before that Costco said they are going to stop selling Coke products due to a pricing dispute. So if your Costco still has them - get them now!
That being said, I will let them bring me a pepsi if need be. I have had a friend order a coke, he wasn't asked "is pepsi okay?", was brought the substituted drink, took one sip and demanded a switch to ice tea. I think his quote was, "the answer to the question you didn't ask is "no, pepsi isn't okay."
Target has a hot price on 12 packs of coke right now: $2.50
I don't understand the Pepsi-hate. I rarely drink soda, but when I was a regular drinker they were more or less interchangeable.
Root Beer > Cherry Coke > Coke/Pepsi
I think it's regional. I grew up in Pennsylvania drinking Pepsi. There are few places in my hometown that serve Coke, mostly chains with no control over selection. I think Coke is too sickly sweet but I will drink it if Pepsi is not available.
Pepsi is gross. that notwithstanding - Jack Daniel's isn't "fine Tennessee-made bourbon," because it's not bourbon. It's Tennessee whiskey, so designated by the feds, not just by nit-picky Tennessee homers.
I only drink diet drinks these days, but Pepsi/diet Pepsi just isn't acceptable in my book. If dining in a restaurant where it's not obvious what they serve, I always ask before ordering my drink. If Pepsi is the only cola product, and diet Dr. Pepper or diet Sprite isn't available, I'll either do unsweetened tea or water.
I try to stay away from sugary sodas (and diet drinks taste poisonous to me), but I've always loved the spicy flavor and prickly carbonation of Coke.
If Coke is not available I'd drink tea or water. I almost always ask bc many people interchange ordering a "Coke" for ordering a soda. I rather go without soda i/o drinking Pepsi.
Pepsi won the "Pepsi Challenge" because it involved one sip.
Since one sip isn't enough, I prefer Coke, to the point of refusing Pepsi product. Tea or water is fine.
you are crazy. pepsi is sweeter than coke; not the other way around.
Never drink Pepsi, and Coke is only for hangovers or mixed with Maker's. I detest diet soft drinks passionately.
With my meals I only drink water or wine. If I go to the movies and order popcorn I drink Dr. Pepper, but never, ever like it any other place or time.
I rarely drink sodas, but I'm more likely to drink one if there's Pepsi. I love it, particularly from the fountain. But I was ECSTATIC to have RC on tap at John's pizza in NYC. YUM.
And no doubt, Pepsi is sweeter. That's why I like it. That Throwback Pepsi with real sugar was awesome.
Did anyone else try the Pepsi Throwback drinks they had this summer? They were made with cane sugar, very good IMO.
Also, I only get fountain drinks at places that have either Wild Cherry Pepsi or Cherry Coke on the tap. Cherry Coke has a lot less cherry flavor, but that is OK. Jersey Mikes on White Bridge and Five Guys both have cherry fountain drinks. McDougal's in Cool Springs must have pulled theirs recently.
