It's like an alarm goes off this time of year -- time to find a fun new Thanksgiving dessert.
The family at the extended Thanksgiving table welcome familiar favorites. Innovation isn't much encouraged. It's a little frustrating -- what if I wanted to bust out with some pumpkin profiteroles with nutmeg creme anglaise? But I take it as a challenge to find a familiar-but-different recipe.
Better Homes and Gardens has been tweeting early Thanksgiving dessert recipes, and I couldn't resist the Pumpkin Chocolate Cheesecake Pie.
The recipe I'm really awaiting is Scott Peacock's coconut cake recipe, which BHG's Twitter meister has been pre-tweeting for a day or so.Peacock's Atlanta restaurant, Watershed, reinvents Southern food while staying true to its spirit. His cookbook with Edna Lewis is full of authentic but somehow innovative Southern recipes and his cookbook.
A professional coconut cake puts pumpkin pie into the shade, is what I'm saying.

agreed. i once foolishly gave up dessert for months, and coconut cake was the first slice of heaven i tasted once i fell off the wagon. we've had a close relationship ever since. did you ever try the coconut cake at Cibo downtown when they were open? perfect.
Of course when I'm not shamelessly promoting Provence desserts, I have to say I have to say Jay Luther from Allium and Germantown makes an awesome pumpkin cheesecake as well as there's this chocolate minty cake he's made that was amazing too.
I've had some pretty stellar pumpkin cheesecake at Yellow Porch.
As for Peacock's Coconut Cake, that will be interesting. In Atlanta (where I grew up) the coconut cake from the Rich's department store bakery was legendary, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution printed the recipe a few years ago. I'll be interested to see if Peacock's will recall that Atlanta standard or if he'll do something different.
P.S. The coconut cake at Firefly / the former Deer Park Grill is pretty darn close to Rich's.
Wouldn't it be great if you could buy the whole pumpkin cheesecake from Allium? Or Firefly? Too bad I never tried Cibo's coconut cake -- that would be a candidate, too.
