Earlier this week we were discussing restaurant service pet peeves. As guests go, I'm fairly undemanding, but one thing that pushes my button is having iced tea topped off over and over, upsetting the critical lemon-sugar balance.
Some friends visited Rotiers recently for a cheeseburger and tea. Will you just look at how cleverly they've done things? Giving the table its own mini pitcher of tea solves two problems: diluted tea and the other frequently mentioned peeve of being parched and having to ration your beverage until you can summon a server. As my friend Kevin said, "That sound of the last of the drink being slurped through a straw should be something every server listens for and responds to."
While we're on the topic of Rotiers, it fell off my destination list some years back because the meat-and-three selection has been uninspired and the other entrees vary so much it's a real gamble to order.
Nevertheless, I strapped on my "fearless eater" armor and ordered a reuben. If the grilled burgers are good, I figured a grilled reuben was a safe bet.
And it lived up to the bet, being reubenesque without a lot of glitz and glam. Just enough of everything--kraut, meat and cheese on slightly greasy grilled rye--means you never get a mouthful of kraut or squishy Thousand Island. It's not Noshville's masterful reuben, mind you, but it's plenty good for lunch.
Whether it's a burger or a reuben, a Rotier's grilled meal has a surprise -- sweet potato fries are now an option in addition to onion rings, fries and onion straws.

One thing that really irks me is when I order a drink and specifically say "with lemon" and when the refill comes along... no lemon! I'm a huge water-with-lemon drinker and this actually happens consistently at most of the restaurants that I frequent. Enough to where I've trained myself to just ask for a bowl of lemons wherever I go.
