A lot of interesting opportunities competed to lead off this week's edition of The Wandering Wino, but in the end how could you ignore the prospect of scores of burly men walking/running/drinking their way through the Belmont/Hillsboro and 12South neighborhoods wearing red dresses? And they want you to join them.
From the Nashville Grizzlies website:
Hold Saturday, October 24th for what will be a great new event for Nashville and the Belmont-Hillsboro and 12 South neighborhoods; the inaugural Grizzlies Red Dress Rampage to benefit the historic Belcourt Theater and the Nashville Grizzlies Rugby Football Club. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, every dollar donated (or very nearly all) will go directly to support these two venerable organizations.
Here's the concept:
WHAT: A fun 5K pub crawl/run or walk from the Village to 12South and back with stops at five of the best local "watering holes" in the neighborhood. There will be a 30 minute rest period at each stop and each runner will be provided a tasty Yazoo beer at each location as part of their registration fee.
Here's the best part, participants are encouraged/required to wear a Red Dress/ Costume/ Shirt/ Whatever during the event. Obviously eye-catching, it's going to be a fun time for all! There will be contests for the best/ worst/craziest dresses and costumes and a special contest for the Best Use of a YAZOO Beer Logo in Your Dress. The grand prize winner will receive a VIP Tasting Tour for 8 at the Yazoo Brewery Tasting Room--if you haven't been, you should!
WHEN: The Rampage starts at Noon on Saturday, October 24th; on-site registration starts at 11:00 am at the Belcourt; we should finish up at Cabana by 5:00 pm
WHERE: Starting Line is the Belcourt Theater; Watering Holes include: PM, 12 South Tap Room, Cha Chah and Cabana.
WHO: 21 and up event; IDs will be checked; Invite everyone fun-loving person you know
DONATION: $40 per participant to register with a credit or debit card online at www.grizzliesreddress.org. Note: cash or check only the day of the event.

If you want to express your "artistic" side a little more conventionally, Boonedocks Distributing has started a free wine tasting with Brinkmann's Wines and Spirits every Saturday at Sips and Strokes off of Carothers from 2-5pm. This Saturday they are pouring wines from Diablita and Esterlina winery in Sonoma, CA. Brinkmann's is offering a 10% discount on wines poured the day of the tasting.
Boonedocks specializes in boutique, artisan style wines which are generally hard to source in our area so you should trust their suggestions. Sips and Strokes is an interesting concept, offering art lessons to non-artists. They encourage you to bring a bottle of your favorite creative lubricant to class to loosen up your artistic inhibitions, but this weekend you can go ahead and let Boonedocks do that for you.
Your friends at Vinea are going totally sideways on "Sideways" this week and are unabashedly expressing their love of Merlot this Saturday October 17th 2pm - 4pm, as they'll be putting on another tasting with their next door neighbors at Corrieri's Formaggeria.
Featured selections include:
2007 Washington Hills Merlot - Washington State - $20.99
2007 La Galiniere Merlot - France - $11.99
2007 181 Merlot - Lodi, California - $15.99
2007 PennFarthing Merlot - Sebastopol, California - $13.99
2006 Chateau Teynac - France - $14.99
2005 Castro Cellars Merlot - Paso Robles, California - $15.99
All tasting wines are 10% off on Saturday at Vinea as well, so drop on by to refuel during the BHN Tour of Homes or after visiting the Christ the King Arts Fair.
Remember that Corrieri's is now charging $5 per person for the tasting. Still a bargain at twice the price.
If you're hungry AND thirsty, there are two upcoming wine/liquor dinners that are worth your attention.
First off is the Appleton Estate Rum dinner at The Palm. Enjoy a specially selected four-course dinner paired with premium tastings of five different handcrafted Appleton Estate Rum for only $79.00 per person.
A Brand Ambassador will co-host this special evening and explain each luxurious tasting with the essence, sophistication and legacy of Appleton Estate. They will also present a special tasting of Appleton's 21 Year Rum, as well as a few extra surprises.
The event is on Friday October 23 at 7:00. RSVP to Paige Dixon at (615) 742-3193 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
