Good to Go at Germantown Fest

I ran into Friend of Bites Pat Embry at the Oktoberfest, and he said out loud what I'd been thinking, except with more cuss words.

"G-----m, it's been 10 years since I came to this festival. The last time I was here, you could f------ park on 4th and walk over to Monroe, and that was the only street where there was festival stuff. Where did all these ---- people come from?"

You needed a strategy for navigating the crowd and seeing what wanted to see. Especially it was important to have a food strategy (but when isn't it?). For instance, I started out too quickly, without making a reconnaissance mission. As a result, I ate a burnt brat, a flavorless barbecue sandwich, and an average cupcake before I discovered the Mad Platter tent, the Mas Tacos truck and Cocoa Tree.

On this chilly, overcast Oktoberfest, everyone must have wanted hot chocolate, because there was a line out the Cocoa Tree door (see the photo above) that never seemed to get any shorter. I didn't get hot cocoa.

Germantown retail and restaurant people, the traffic looked great. Was it a good day, and was it worth the headache?

And what did other festival-goers eat that was good?

It was definitely more crowded than the last time I went--about 3 years ago. Fortunately, I really lucked out on lines (well, except for beer--that line never seemed to go down). I had my first Mas Tacos fish taco (delicious), and I managed to hit the Cocoa Tree when the line was just inside. The Mayan hot chocolate and truffles were worth a wait--I highly recommend the Darkest Dark truffle. Overall, I thought it was a blast--especially when Super T took the stage.

It's a flat out crazy day, no doubt. Crowds continue to grow, Music this year was superb, and food options are improving.
For the most part, 40k well behaved Paulaner drinkers made it worth the headache (& clean-up). Logistically, it still needs work to coordinate vendors & their placement so visitors know exactly what's what.

I went last year for the first time in several years and had the same reaction, including the colorful language, at how much it had grown. We had such a ridiculous time trying to get something to eat, this year we ate before we went, and then we were able to concentrated on chocolates from the Cocoa Tree (the Mayan hot chocolate is a fav) and beer.

It's hard not to smile with a liter of dark Paulaner making your arm sore...

TommyNoodles thanks for checking in -- I can only imagine the clean up. I know I speak for thousands when I say thank you for cleaning up after us.
