My conscience likes the trend toward environmentally friendly takeout gear. It's been a source of annoyance for decades that sandwich wrappers and napkins are bleached. But signs are everywhere, thanks goodness. A catered photo shoot last month for the Square Foot Garden cookbook featured Bread & Company sandwiches (roast beef with horseradish-chive mayo!) wrapped in unbleached paper.
That evening, dinner chez Wood was again takeout, from somewhere else. It came in a big black plastic clamshell that looked as out of place as a percolator. I'm hoping my daughter will have to explain to her children what plastic clamshells were, the way we've had to explain tonsillectomies, phone booths and tennis dresses to ours.
