Mayo's & Mahalia Jackson's Reopening

Posted by on Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at 6:50 AM

From roving NFocus editor Ellen Nelson:

After being shuttered for more than a year, the iconic Mayo's & Mahalia Jackson's Fried Pies & Chicken is back in business as of today. New owner Erika White has been hard at work, painting the single-wide trailer a sunny yellow and scrubbing the stainless steel ovens, stoves, sinks and fryers 'til they're glistening and ready to churn out more world-renowned fried chicken and pies.

The tiny, easy-to-miss dive has long been a favorite of foodies and writers, including Southern Foodways aficionado John T. Edge and Jeffrey Steingarten of Vogue and Iron Chef fame.

White decided to keep the name and the succulent delicacies Mahalia's was known for-- but she's brought the joint into the 21st century with some new offerings. Philly cheesesteaks, Italian ices, wings and other treats will be served from the walk-up window.

Located at 2008 Jefferson St., Mayo's & Mahalia Jackson's Fried Pies & Chicken is open 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
