As you're culling through your tomato crops, keep an eye open for two extremes: tomatoes beautiful enough to launch a thousand ships and ones so f-ing ugly that only a mother could love them. There's a place in this 'mater-loving world for them both.
During Saturday's Tomato Art Fest, WPLN's Jacqueline Fellows will emcee the Most Beautiful Tomato Pageant. Here is how it works: Take an ordinary genuine tomato, and dress, adorn or decorate it as if it were headed to a beauty contest or costume party. There will be heats for ages 10 and under, 11 through 17 and 18 and up.
To enter, bring your candidates to the Clearview Fashion Show Stage at 3:15 p.m. Judging will commence at 3:30 and prizes will be awarded at 4. The winners in each category will receive ribbons, gift certificates and items donated by Alegria and other local merchants. For an entry form, contact Bil Breyer at Alegria at 227-8566.
Tomatoes not so purty? Don't despair. The Ugly Tomato Contest at the Farmers' Market is coming up Aug. 29, and we'll keep you posted with the details. Until then, please, for the sake of everyone, keep your hideous tomatoes hidden--maybe between two pieces of white bread with some bacon and a slather of mayo.
