'Fame' Flashes at the Farmers' Market

Posted by Carrington Fox on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 2:39 PM

It's not exactly a T-Mobile advert, but this weekend's display at the Farmers' Market by the Circle Players is impressive. Can any eyewitnesses testify?

Wow, I'm with Barbara, 100%! I love the people who started joining in! Now I may start stalking Farmer's Market on Saturdays.

I was there! It was totally unexpected and seemed spontaneous, and it wasn't until after it was over and the actors and dancers started handing out fliers for their performance that we realized it was planned. But the fact that they made it feel like an unplanned, spontaneous burst of dance fever (and I saw people joining in who were not a part of the group!) was what turned it into a very fun experience. I hope they do more things of that nature down there. The farmer's market has really become a nice spot not just to shop, but to eat and hang out and it's great.

Love it! I usually go on Saturdays, too. I'm kicking myself for not going. I wish they would have done the "Hot Lunch" song from Fame. LOL.
While we're on the subject, there was a similar "performance" at the Mall of America - a friend sent it to me a few weeks ago. Over 80 people broke out into song ("You Make my Dreams Come True" by Hall and Oates). Very cool. Unfortunately, it seems to have been removed from youtube.

A bunch of us kept seeing videos like this on Youtube (T Mobile Dance, Do Re Mi Dance, etc) and thought "We could do that." When we started rehearsing for the show "Fame," it seemed like a really natural fit, so we opened it up to cast members, Artist Members, and other Circle supporters. In the end, we had about 60 dancers at the event--ironic since this is the first show of Circle's 60th season.
We started rehearsing that morning at 10am and performed at noon--the quickest turnaround I've ever seen on a performance. We had a blast, but it wasn't until I got to editing it that I noticed how much fun the crowd was having with it. The Farmers' Market is wanting us to come back, but right now, after weeks of planning, I just need sleep.

If each one of those folks had instead just spontaneously bought a 1/2 rib plate once a week, Mothership BBQ would still be open.
Oh well, it looks like fun! My only concern is that it offers more encouragement to folks who learn the Electric Slide on Carnival cruises.

I do like how when it's over, everyone just sits back down and goes on with whatever they were doing, not acknowledging the applause.
If only they'd gone outside and danced on cars like they do in the movie. But not my car.

The Improv Everywhere things where you download instructions and go to say the Sheep Meadow or whatever and then proceed from there are the best. I have a friend who's an agent and she's been doing them for a while.

Where else could you stage a good flash mob in Nashville?
