Become a Part of the Collective Unconscious(ness)

If you're not on Twitter.com yet, just wait. You will be. Or maybe it'll be too late and the coolness will have worn off by the time you give in to the hip. How's that Compuserve account working out for you?

For the uninformed, Twitter is a service designed to allow users to send messages up to 140 characters from their computers or cell phones to a group of "followers" in order to keep your friends and colleagues informed about your daily activities. I liken it to a CB radio where you decide who knows what channel you're on. Breaker, breaker, good buddy.

Twittering has also largely replaced live-blogging as a way to share your impressions of the events of the day. From last year's presidential debates to live sporting events to the Michael Jackson memorial, friends across town or across the globe can share opinions of the same events in real time...if you're into that sort of stuff. To some of us, it has turned the internet into a mind-numbing endless episode of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 with a seemingly unlimited number of Tom Servo and Crow T. robots. But without the cleverness.

However, the winemakers at St. Supery Vineyards and Winery are employing a fascinating new use for the service, Twitter Taste Live. The concept is that you can either order a particular assortment of wines directly from the winery or pick up some or all of the selected vintages up at your local wine store. At the predetermined time, you register and log on to the TasteLive.com site where you will be led on a guided tasting by a representative of the winery and have the opportunity to share your assessments with other aficionados participating in the same experience.

This Saturday July 11 from 8:00 until 10:00 pm CDT, St. Supery's executive winemaker Michael Scholz will be conducting the tasting and offering his insights into the production of their 2008 Sauvignon Blanc, 2008 Moscato, 2006 Virtú and 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon.

I'm a big fan of their Virtú blend of white Bordeaux varietals. Both the Virtú and the `04 Cab could stand up to extended cellaring, but the point of wine tasting is to drink some now and put some back for comparison later. Generally, I'm not much of a patient man and who knows what truck I might step out in front of next week, so I'm excited about the chance to try these wines right damned now with the guidance of a master vintner.

The Sauvignon Blanc and the Moscato are more of the carpe diem variety. As Robin Williams said, "I like my wine like my women -- ready to pass out." These two wines are ready to drink soon and often. All of the 2008 vintages survived the crushing California freeze of April that wiped out many less robust vines. The heartiest grapes emerged with amazingly concentrated floral and fruit profiles that are extremely focused and intense. You could do a lot worse than sharing a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc before dinner and a bottle of Moscato afterwards.

Now that Tennessee has emerged from the cave of archaic wine importing laws to at least allow shipping from out of state wineries it will be much easier to participate in events like TasteLive.com. Unfortunately, the new law became effective on July 1 which really didn't leave enough time to order the 4-pack directly from the winery. The good news is that many excellent wine shops in Nashville carry at least some of these St. Supery selections. As always, we here at Bites recommend that you make friends with your local purveyor of fine wines so that he or she can learn what you like and make recommendations for you.

I'll definitely be participating in this coming Saturday's Twitter Tasting, and while events like this are novel, they'll never take the place of a good local merchant. I hope to see you both online and offline.
