Empty Plate: Hot Dogs, Apple Pie, Watermelon and Our Weekly Open Thread

Posted by Jim Ridley on Fri, Jul 3, 2009 at 12:21 PM

Satay, Taste of Russia, Taco Lopez #6--these were just a few of the favorites people shared in last week's Bites open thread, where you set the agenda for the discussion. What's on your mind this week? Any great Fourth of July activities, recipes, specials or meals we should know about? Anyone going to Thirth tonight on the East Side, or to the Hot Chicken Festival tomorrow morning?

Here's Sally from last week's thread, describing another beloved East Nashville fixture:

I think I just had one of my best Sunday afternoon lunches ever. I hit the Mas Tacos truck in the Walden Market and had a fish taco and quinoa taco. Fabulously tasty! I washed it all down with an incredible fresh mint iced tea from Ugly Mugs. Check it out while it lasts. On the way home I hit Las Paletas. I lucked out, they are open on Sundays until 5. Now if all my lunches were so great and local!

Funny, I haven't had much trouble finding local lunches around here. And remember, if you have news, tips, gossip or other info you want to pass along in private, send it to cfox (at) nashvillescene (dot) com. Happy Thirth and Fourth of July!

I didn't remember from last year, but I have heard that Tennessee's utterly whacked-out liquor laws require retail liquor outlets to be closed on July 4th.
Hie thee to a liquor store today!! You'll be disappointed if you wait until tomorrow.
That settles it, I'm running for governor. Is there anybody else running yet? What's that, 22 other folks already? Never mind.

You got my vote. Well, it's between you and that guy who sells watermelons at the Mapco in Kingston Springs.

I managed to spend some $40 at the farmers' market yesterday. I thought that stuff was supposed to be cheaper than the grocery! Ha, only kidding. It's worth the $5 per for other people to pick the blueberries and blackberries and peaches. By the way, don't waste your time on South Carolina* peaches this year--the Tennessee peaches are fantastic and the SC ones are bland.
*As my friend, Tim Morgan says, this year's South Carolina peaches come from Argentina.

Looks like Nuvo Burrito will be opening behind Marche fairly soon.

Casey: What do you know about Nuvo Burrito? Is it a neighborhood joint or a chain?

Lesley: The peaches I had at Peach Park in Clanton, Ala., were perfect: my hands and chin were dripping juice, the skin was firm but the flesh parted easily, and each bite gave off an audible squish. Folks in Murfreesboro line up for Gilliland peaches, which I believe you can find in a church parking lot downtown near the Square.

Also: Did anyone here check out the Thirth celebration?

It appears to be locally owned -- more info coming tomorrow on Bites. Stay tuned....

Nuvo Burrito's going in the old Z's Deli space. Heard about it at Marche over a cold fried chicken sandwich that rocked.

The roommate brought home leftovers from Cheddar's. I was skeptical, but the chicken tenders were way above average. The batter reminded me of tempura, really crunchy and spicy. She left a couple of shrimp in too and they were good (which I did not expect).

We will be in Nashville in July, and love pie. Where is the best place to get apple pie, or other pies?

Apple — now that you ask, I'm drawing a blank. (Actually, laugh all you want, but Cracker Barrel has a pretty formidable apple pie.) But I love the pie slices at Arnold's on Eighth: chess, chocolate, pecan. Jack Silverman brought me a rhubarb tart from Marche that was really good.

The Pie Wagon! Visit Music Row, stop at the Pie Wagon. Arnold's selection is good, too. That chess pie with the meringue is one-of-a-kind. At the Table further south on Eighth has a good sweet potato pie that you won't find just anywhere.

Sweet potato pie?! I've been looking for a good one in town ever since I got hooked on them at Interstate BBQ in Memphis.

I'll get my coat.

Seconded on At the Table, one of the most underrated restaurants in town. If there's ever a day Arnold's is just too slammed for you, At the Table is about three blocks away on 12th and will more than scratch that meat-n-three itch. And the sweet potato pie rocks.

I just got back from Ate the Table. When I asked if they had any sweet potato pie, the woman behind the steam table looked at me like I was an alien asking for a plate of puppy tails.

Whatupwitdat?

I was at Sunset Grill for lunch today and, as I walked out, I noticed Verenda (old space for The Trace) had a Now Open for Lunch and Dinner sign on it and there were waiters walking around. Anyone else notice it's open now?

Wut? Really? It's been 15 months since I went, but seriously, I think it's a law that meat-n-threes have sweet potato pie.

Did they have any pie at all?
