Why is it cheaper to get peaches from Mexico than Kentucky? Why is it so rare to find the cheapest, most sustainable fish -- herring -- for sale? And what the hell are all those ingredients in frozen entrees?
Martha Stamps will answer at least some of those questions at the first Lunch and Learn at the Farmers' Market on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Stamps is a high-profile caterer and proprietor (until a couple of weeks ago) of Martha's at the Plantation, the beloved Southern and locavore eatery at Belle Meade Mansion that carved out a place for itself among foodies and neighbors alike.
The lunch, probably cooked by Martha and priced at $15, is the first of six consecutive Tuesday Lunch and Learns at the Farmers' Market. Other topics, which will doubtless raise standards and questions as well as hackles, include the tangled world of "organics," heirloom plant varieties and a final program on the family table, stewardship and social justice.
