As if we needed another killer cupcake, The Picnic in Belle Meade serves a stealth dessert that just might take the cake. There would be a photo of it here if I hadn't sucked down the whole thing in a blaze of sugar-fed ecstasy before I regained the presence of mind to reach for my camera. But you know what it looked like: round, about two inches high, cakey looking, with a swirl of buttercream on top.
What most stood out about the vanilla cupcake--which was superior to the chocolate--was its color. Unlike plain-old white or yellow cake, this recipe had a faintly tawny tinge. The hue might have reflected a dose of vanilla, which perfumed the moist dessert and gave it a reassuringly homemade flavor.
The Picnic's cupcake, which is the size of one you'd make at home in a muffin tin--not one of those 'roided up specimens--costs a whopping $3--and comes in chocolate, vanilla and red velvet.

I love ANY cupcake but I'd have to say the Picnic's is by far by favorite -- even surpassing all of the "gourmet" cupcakes that have come to town. $3.00 is a steep price to pay but worth every penny. Still I say, if you're buying cupcakes for your toddler, they'll be just as happy with grocery store ones. But upgrade for yourself!
I had one a while back at The Picnic and liked it just fine but didn't think it stood out, necessarily. I'll have to go back and try one again, especially now that they have a nice patio dining area. If I want to be knocked out by a cupcake I go to Dulce's or Cupcake Collection.
A new tagline for Music City postcards: Come to Nashville. We have cupcakes.
Be sure to try the vanilla. Far superior to chocolate. It tastes like, wait for it, vanilla.
The secret is the Picnic doesn't make the cupcakes or the Strawberry Cakes--it is Ivey Baird that has a tiny cake store in Franklin called IveyCake. If you haven't tried the strawberry cake then you are really missing out!
Like I always say, any baker is only as good as their vanilla cake. Are they better than Cupcake Collection?
not to quibble with Stepford Wife, but I only give my toddler and his classmates the "good" cupcakes, a.ka., the ones made with fresh ingredients. Though he may not know the difference, I can't stand the idea of the grocery store cupcakes with their shortening-based frosting and horrible bright colors. gross!
