Empty Plate: The Restaurant's Closed, But the Thread Is Open

Posted by Jim Ridley on Fri, Jun 5, 2009 at 7:25 AM

You folks love Bombay Palace for Indian, Seoul Garden for Korean, Ombi for the Sageberry Cocktail and Genie's Persian Palace for the lunch buffet. Or so you said on last week's Bites open thread, where the topic of discussion is whatever's on your mind. Got tips? Complaints? A dining experience you've just gotta share? Put it on the table here.

Here's Delaney from last week on a stellar evening of local cuisine:

Generous Helpings was a (pork-heavy) delight. I think any vegetarians would have been pretty stranded, except by Margot's exquisite trio of crostini (radish and herb butter was a standout). Monell's came out fighting with their world-class fried chicken, but the bite I can't stop thinking about was the Old 97 Goo Goo Brownie: a flaky brownie chock full of well-toasted pecans, topped with a dollop of browned marshmallow and drizzled with whiskey caramel sauce. HOLY MOTHER it was good. I *think* it was courtesy of Sunset Grill but I'm kicking myself for not confirming.

Hey, we're kicking ourselves for not going. Meanwhile, if you have news, tips, gripes or anything else you want to pass along in private, write cfox (at) nashvillescene (dot) com.

I moved last weekend and became an East Nasville resident, rather than doing the usual post-moving meal of pizza my girlfriend and I decided to try out Tom's Elite Carry-Out. Great decision! We got a rib pack with mac'n cheese, slaw, and corn cakes and added some smoked wings. Everything was delicious and there was enough food for two meals each. The ribs were falling off the bone and excellent with or without the sauce that comes on the side, the wings were moist with great smoke.

Went to Ri'Chard's last Friday. Ordered red beans and rice. Rice was one big clump stuck together and the beans had all the water cooked out of them. It seemed like it was cooked that morning and had sat on the stove uncovered for the rest of the day. Same with my wife's jambalaya. Great seasoning, but her rice was like that of nextday rice from Chinese takeout. Dessert was choc/pecan/bourban pie which was great, but the beignet's were ordered at 7:00, we left the place at 7:25 and they were just put in the fryer. We asked our waitress to give them to the table next to us when they were done since they were paid for. Cool place, just not the place to have only two girls waiting tables.

Does anybody have a good recipe with fresh horseradish? My wife just pulled a bunch out of the garden and I'm so excited I don't know what to do with it!

My girlfriend's mom makes a horseradish/beet concoction called Cwikla that we have with ham and kielbasa very year at Easter. As off as it sounds and as bold as it looks, it is something I look forward to as much as Cadbury Eggs.
Ingredients from Recipezaar:
* 3 cups sliced cooked fresh beets or canned beets
* 1 large onion, sliced into thin rings
* 1 tablespoon grated fresh horseradish or 4 teaspoons prepared horseradish
* 8 whole cloves or 1/2 teaspoon caraway seed
* 2 cups vinegar
* 1 tablespoon brown sugar
* 2 teaspoons salt
Boil the vinegar and salt and pour over the rest of the ingredients and refrigerate.
Na zdrowie.

Apropos of nothing, the Voice has a list of words overused in food writing. Alas, they left off "veggie."

I'm happy to report that a new Ethiopian restaurant has opened in the Antioch area.
Goha Ethiopian Restaurant And Cafe
2525A Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville 37217
They just opened today; currently they only have a mini-buffet and no full menu. The owners/staff were very nice and told us they'd have the full menu finished and available in a few days.
On the buffet this afternoon (which was $10/person) were the following:
two lamb dishes (one diced chunks with red/yellow/green peppers and rosemary; the other was backbone pieces i believe; both were mild and not spicy)
a chicken dish with large fillets in a dark, smokey, and spicy sauce
collard greens
green beans and carrots
cabbage and carrots
salad (lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenoes) with a light dressing
a red paste like condiment that i couldn't place; was not spicy as i had assumed it would be
and injera of course
Everything was very flavorful and fresh. Upon hearing my wife was vegetarian they were very quick to make sure the vegetable dishes were full and brought her some salad straight to the table as the bowl was empty when we were fililng our plates. The injera was good as well; a bit more sour on its own than what i've tasted at other places.
I'll certainly be looking forward to going back when they have a full menu and hopefully some lentil dishes.

Word of warning on the horseradish - never put it in a Cuisinart. Your house will stink for days.
And for a recipe,

eskaton - thanks for the heads up on the new Ethiopian restaurant. I have been silently mourning the close of Bethel a year ago. Can't wait to try a new one in town.
Has anyone tried Gojo on Thompson Ln.? I still have not managed to go when they are actually open.

I've had the lunch buffet at Gojo a couple of times. It is quite good, particularly the vegetable dishes.

I really like this place too. The owners are so nice, and the buffet was very fresh and flavorful in our experiences.

Looks like there will be another Ethiopian place opening a block away from there in the K-Mart Shopping Center. I am excited to try both of them. Goha is open now and the other doesn't look far from opening.
