Mini Birthday Dilemma Gets a Mini Cake Solution

Posted by Carrington Fox on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 6:45 AM

Man, I really sweated the cake decision at the most recent Fox family birthday throwdown. We narrowed it down to cupcakes, since there would be a mad rush of 6-year-olds who needed cake, stat, and experience has shown that no matter how experienced a slicer you are, you just can't keep up with that level of demand. And lord help you if you hand someone a pink rose when they wanted a blue "H," or vice versa. Not to mention all the landfill of plastic plates and forks. Not this time. Cupcakes it would be.

But from where? The possibilities are endless and well documented on Bites. Indeed, there is no shortage of cupcakes in Nashville. Would I turn to my friend Juanita at Dulce? Or Brooke at Ice This? The Cupcake Collection in Germantown? Christie Cookies? Gigi? Sweet 16th? Cuppycakes?

As party time approached, I began to tighten the circle--and lower the bar--based on geography: Kroger? Publix? Harris Teeter? Maggie Moos has those ice cream cupcakes, don't they?

In the end, it was my ever-practical mom who made the call, and it was a triumphantly efficient one at that. No forks, no plates, just a bunch of wet wipes and a dustbuster after the fact. I think I might have even heard my favorite words: "Mommy, you are a genius."

Or maybe I was the one saying that.

Just what was the chosen cake? Find out after the jump.

Nothing less than a pile of Krispy Kreme Minis.

Yes, $20 bought 60 Minis, which come 20 to a box and somehow managed to feed the 10,000 children in my house. One of the mini guests--possibly my own offspring--bragged to me that he had eaten five. At one point, I heard a tow-headed child tell his daddy, "I want another one, but there are only two left--one was bitten and one was sucked on."

A success by almost any measure.

Wow, go mom! Great idea.
I haven't yet tried the minis, but that doesn't mean I haven't been fiending to.

The moms at the party decided there was a 5:1 ratio of minis to regulars. Basically you can eat as many as you want.

I came to the same conclusion last year re: cupcakes. And my precious neighbor bought me a cupcake stand. But tell: are those fondant dots decorating your cake stand? Mommy, you are a genius!

and if you are hankering for more, Friday is actually the well know holiday, National Donut Day. Dunkin Donuts will be giving away a free donut with a beverage purchase. There is a new Dunkin in the shiny new MTA terminal downtown... ride the bus and grab a donut!

We were thinking of doing Krispy Kreme as "wedding favors"...now that I know they have mini's, that's great, people can have even more!!
