A survey of 755 residents of New York City, where menu-labeling laws went into effect in 2008, showed that 90 percent of those surveyed read the nutrition information, and that they were surprised at the calorie counts of their favorites. Seventy-one percent made a different selection, 51 percent stopped ordering certain items, and 62 percent sought out restaurants that offered more healthful options.
That's a mixed bag for the Bites crowd: It's no good to send your customers running away from their favorites. But in terms of public health, the answers speak for themselves, and once again, dang it, we're left responsible for making good choices.
