Feds Seek Tangredi Maserati

Posted by Nicki Wood on Wed, May 20, 2009 at 4:31 PM

The U.S. attorney's office in Middle Tennessee is seeking forfeiture of a Maserati owned by Michael G. Tangredi, saying the $37,000 car was bought with ill-gotten gains from a credit card scam, according to a story in NashvillePost.com. (The story is behind a subscription wall until Monday.)

To recap: in early December, American Express asked a federal court here for help in recovering $1.22 million in what it calls fraudulent charges by M. Tangredi Restaurants.

Shortly after that, the U.S. Department of Labor filed suit against M. Tangredi Restaurants in December for failure to produce wage and payroll records. A grand jury indicted Michael G. Tangredi on charges of forging a check to pay past-due taxes in mid-March.

In early February, M. Tangredi Restaurants filed for reorganization of debts under Chapter 11. That was converted to a Chapter 7 liquidation by a bankruptcy judge in early March.

The NashvillePost.com story includes a copy of the affidavit by the Secret Service agent assigned to the case--the service is often involved where there is suspected information technology fraud--which offers a succinct explanation of the case to date.

Since when is a Maserati only $37,000.00?
I just can't get over how stupid someone has to be to try and scam American Express. I mean, really! Why not just go try to cheat in Vegas? I am sure that will work out equally well.

I always lusted after that Maserati while we were walking past Tangredi's Sysco Cafe on the way to another restaurant. I'll be glad to buy it at auction!

@Sean: it was used. And Cee and zorro! Check you out with your detailed knowledge of Maseratis. Are you in the market for one? Cee, that would complete your fleet of handome, out-of-the-ordinary cars.

I just don't get this whole thing, Nicki, can you explain it to me a little better? How are they seizing their car, but the Nashville Post said that there was no criminal action taken against Tangredi yet, with the exception of that tax thing, which I understand to be unrelated. Also, what about the Bentley that everyone was talking about? I heard somewhere that they had a Bentley too.

The Post said that no federal criminal charges have been filed, that's correct. The other charges are not criminal -- it's not the business of the US Department of Labor or the bankruptcy court to prove criminality. The American Express suit is in US District Court; I don't have information about whether there are charges pending there. I think they just want their money back. Read the affidavit associated with the latest story -- it has the best information.

Thanks, that did clear up a little. There were so many things that I had heard about surrounding the Tangredis, but the affidavit did review it pretty well. Thanks again....

Lawsuit is still pending. The Tangredi's filed default judgements against each and every defendant. Defaults that were of course invalid. I think most of their defaults were for not defendants not providing evidence (which they don't have to) and one was possibly for a defendant not filing an answer that had not been served the complaint.
Regardless, this is pretty entertaining. The affidavit was a little helpful with explaining. I wonder when they'll be indicted for this one.
As far as AmEx getting their money back, I don't see it happening

The defendants' motions to dismiss were denied as well. Not only that, I've heard from several sources that there will not be an indictment, just this seizure case. This interests me.

Please no one start with the posting wars again. Let's not have another 54 comments. We all have better things to do....well, most of us.

LOL - motions to dismiss are rarely granted. So for a defendant to have this motion denied would be fairly standard. This doesn't mean that the plantiff will win. This just shows that the judge is giving the plantiff a chance. If this was not the case then the court systems would be pointless in civil litigation. Everyone would just motion to dismiss.
It looks like this is being handled pro se by both sides. Does anyone know if that is the case? If so, what a mess for the clerks office.

I've actually heard that the clerks office is having a heck of a time with this mess!
Tons of exhibits being filed, things being filed incorrectly, and defendants calling in for help. Apparently every single clerk in the office knows about the case because of the huge pain it has been causing, as well as many lawyers just casually observing...

Sorry to hear about your maserati guys, but "despite the press I've heard nothing but good things about you and your family lately. Best of luck in your several legal embattlements, I hope that all works out as much in your favor as possible."
And I knew this was all Individual A's from the beginning. I really hope you get all those bastards involved in that conspiracy! Despite the fact that you have no legitimate grounds to sue any of them, don't let that stop you.
Also, I name exhibit p as the all time funniest exhibit in this case, in the world...ever! I urge everybody that can to read it, honestly.

In addition to my previous post, I've created a new public forum for the discussion of this lawsuit. Feel free to visit TangrediCircus.blogspot.com and email me if you'd like to talk. Once again, this is Dennis. We are all well within our rights to discuss as a group our experiences both being employed by, and sued by this family.

Unfortunately this remains as one of the only open forums to discuss things since Tangredi Karma was hacked and deleted.
I just got some more legal papers (papers in which I had to go to the post office and pay to receive since the Tangredi's appear to know as much about the USPS as they do about the legal system) stating that some more people have been dragged into this circus of a lawsuit. If any of you new "John Doe's" who would like to discuss anything regarding this, please contact me. I've been trying to assure people from the beginning that wasting money on lawyers is not necessary. I'd be glad to share what I have learned so far and together all of us can calmly and patiently watch the Tangredi empire continue to crash by their own doing.
If you're interested in talking, please leave a post and we'll work on communicating from there. Don't worry, this really is Dishwasher Dennis with the lightning bolt tattoo, for those of you who have met me.
