I finally got around to trying Allium in East Nashville a few nights ago, and although the place has received generally upbeat and even enthusiastic notices, I have to say we were underwhelmed. Maybe it was a case of overly high expectations. The menu is appealing, the wine list solid, and the service just fine, but the food was markedly uneven. For instance: gnocchi in a flavorful but gloppy sauce, steak that was tender but over salted, mediocre bread, and a risotto side that was more congealed than creamy.
I really want to like this place, and we'll certainly give it another try. But the kicker -- the thing that escalated private disappointment into public Bites post -- is no espresso! A french bistro with no espresso? Sacrebleu!
