A while ago, after a visit to K&S World Market, I was lamenting the fact that I had trouble finding some traditional Thai ingredients. Someone pointed me in the direction of Lao Trading Co. on Eighth Avenue. Yesterday, after a stop at All Seasons to pick up a thyme plant (Gardens of Babylon has been out both times I've visited--go figure), I stopped by. Here was my haul:
2 stalks of lemongrass
1 largish piece of galangal (Thai ginger)
2.2 lbs of rice noodles (on sale for $3.99--my splurge item)
1 bottle of chili oil
1 16 oz. tub of palm sugar (one of those things I couldn't locate at K&S; here they had multiple brands)
2 small cans of coconut milk
1 large can of coconut milk
My total bill: $11.11 (which for some reason gave the proprietor a big kick).
The place had tons more great stuff, including fresh rice and egg noodles, sausages and about 50 different brands of fish sauce. I will definitely be returning, even if they were out of chilis.
