In what is possibly the best emerging trend of the alleged Depression, yet another restaurant is giving away free food. On May 1, Back Yard Burgers will dole out 1/3-pound burgers to the first 100 people in the store. The Nashville-based company's inaugural burger bailout--which kicks off National Burger Month--comes on the heels of free cone day at Ben & Jerry's, free sandwiches at Which Wich and free burritos for a year at Moe's Southwestern Grill. What other free stuff are we missing?
Back Yard Burgers has two stores in the Nashville area: 2744 Elm Hill Pike and 5004 Maryland Way.

After Fat Mo's, Backyard is the only chain burger I would remotely consider. It really does taste grilled, and not in that fake charcoal-additive way. But I'm more partial to their chicken sandwiches, especially the Cajun and the Hawaiian (topped with a pineapple ring).
Didn't they once serve waffle fries?
5 Guys > Fat Mo's > Cheeseburger Charlies > Backyard.
I can't speak too much for the Back Yard Burgers of today, but this here vegetarian once worked for the corporate office in Memphis before it was bought and moved to Nashville. And yes, everything is grilled on an actual grill. I'm trying to remember the name of that grill vendor. MagiKitchen?
And yes, battered waffle fries. YUM. And way back then (1993), employees had to get to work at 8am to make all the burgers for the day by hand. No pre-made, frozen patties. Don't know what they're doing now (but for $ sake, I bet they're pre-made).
On the very first BYB menu, there was a burger called the Horsey Burger (because it had horseradish sauce on it). Luckily, they got some good marketing people and renamed it the French Dip.
And it was while I was working for BYB that I stopped eating hamburgers from any other fast food chain. Only BYB until I stopped eating meat altogether.
Lesley -- Were you working there when they "Black Angused" everything? They raised the burger to black angus beef and then started trying to similarly upgrade the quality of hot dogs and everything else -- don't know how far they actually got, but I love "Black Angusing" as an expression for elevating the quality of every aspect of something.
