Yesterday it was supposed to storm. I planned my day accordingly. This meant that I had a lazy, rainy day while the sun was shining bright--no regrets. After an afternoon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD with a gal pal, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at City House, probably my favorite restaurant in town.
I like it even more on Sundays, when the atmosphere is relaxed and the menu is designed for sharing. We decided to split a couple appetizers and a pizza--and had a really tough time coming to a consensus. There were so many beautiful things on the menu, including six intriguing pies. I insisted we have the artichoke appetizer--a whole fresh one stuffed with walnut pesto--and we also agreed upon some spare ribs, done with a lemony, fennel-seedy crust. They were both insanely good--especially the ribs, which fell off the bone and had the most miraculous tang.
After much debate, we ordered a pizza topped with broccoli rabe, garlic, chiles and mozzarella (one with mushrooms and ham bits almost made the cut). The bite of the rabe went perfectly with the heat of the chiles and the chewiness of the exquisite, wood-fired crust.
Have I mentioned that I love this place?

Me too! I went with a friend Friday night. The belly ham/mozzarella/grana padano pizza was fab!
and did I mention the Brussel sprouts? My gawd they were awesome.
I had some great Brussels sprouts studded with bacon at 1808 Grille the other night.
Kevin Bacon was a stud in Brussels when I was just a sprout.
wow - i'm only one degree of separation from that last comment.
tandy is a breath of fresh air in this town - no doubt... best thing to happen to the nashville food scene in forever.
not to rain on the party, but unless your pizza was slathered in layers of a meat-based stew that may or may not have contained beans and sometimes comes in a can labeled oh, Hormel or Varallo's or Skyline or some such provider, chances are you actually had chiles on that pie.
Good catch. I've made the correction in the text. Thx.
chil·i also chil·e or chil·li
NOUN:
pl. chil·ies , also chil·es or chil·lies
The pungent fresh or dried fruit of any of several cultivated varieties of capsicum, used especially as a flavoring in cooking. Also called chili pepper.
This could be the beginning of a Chili's versus Chile Burrito smackdown.
This has got to be the most overrated restaurant in Nashville. I've been there three times and on each occasion both entrees served our party were barely edible because of their saltiness. Granted, it's a truly cool space but there's no way the atmosphere makes up for the poor quality of the food.
second that about the saltiness...on my lone visit to City House two in my party both complained of saltiness in the entrees. Pizza was better than good, fish dishes way over-salty. But I've been meaning to get back there for the pizza, olive apps, and overall experience.
I think it's the best place in town - it's not even close, really - and right on the money authenticity-wise. I've never had anything bad there, though I miss Austin the mixologist.
But does anyone know why they don't participate in the Nashville Originals group? Margot and Marché don't either. It seems like a no-brainer because they do so much free publicity, so I'm just wondering.
