Here comes Erin's Food Files with the first homemade marshmallow treats that are recognizable as the storebought items they emulate. And not just any items--they're Peeps! With the same spooky artificial yellow that doesn't exist in nature! Props to Erin for outfitting hers with a hawkish beak that should ensure the survival of the species.
• My kids prefer tacos made with Morningstar TVP crumbles over actual ground beef. So Lesley Eats' post on the unexpected delights of the Gardenburger BBQ Riblet raised more than an eyebrow. "The sauce is tasty with just a bit of tang and the ribs themselves had a nice taste," Lesley writes. The problem is that the box makes these look as unnaturally sculpted as a McRib.
• Bibimbap as leftover repository? Genius! A couple of fried eggs, some reheated spinach, a smattering of tofu chunks and MacGyvered gochujang, and Melissa at Strawberry Beret has something that might sate my hunger for Wild Wasabi's fish bibimbap.
• Who's eating where: Nashville Restaurants at Las Cazuelas on Nolensville Road; Lannae's Food and Travel at Al-Rasoul/USA Bakery on Elysian Fields; Nashville Foodies at Sylvan Park; Ulika at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint and BB's Bar-B-Q in Williamson County. (P.S. Don't forget to vote for Ulika in the Fav BBQ Blog poll.)
• "I am going to possibly pull a Ryan Adams and call this my last blog post about food ever...There are plenty of other 'food bloggers' out there to tow the line, some of them actually good." Say it ain't so, Joy of Cooking.

If you take away nothing else from this sampler, go vote for Ulika. I looked at the other blogs up for the honor, and Ulika was by far my favorite. They're about 80 votes behind the leader (All Things Barbecue, last time I looked) but definitely near the top. Loyal Biters, you could put 'em over the top.
USA Bakery sounds beyond awesome.
I avoided the Gardenburger Riblet for its resemblance to the McRib for a long, long time. But Trader Joe's price is low and the SO and I occasionally need some processed convenience food.
Also, the Riblet comes out looking more like a plank. I did not notice any visible signs of bone-in fabrication.
riblet - reminds me of the Ribwich on the Simpsons where they pour the "food" into rib-shaped molds like pouring molten steel. "
Erin. Is. My. Hero. Oh, maker of Marshmallow Lovelies, tell me -- are you going to eat those?
It is so. But not to worry as there will be a new project and you'll be the first to know about it!
And, on the subject of 'peeps' I want to add that my friend Tom the baker over at marché has some lovely little homemade peeps on the counter over there that you should all check out! Just like the originals, only better.
i'm totally pulling for ulika - everyone needs to vote.
and erin's blog is wonderful! go on over and weigh in on some of her food. even if i totally don't get the whole gelatin + sugar = delicious. but crafty and fun? absolutely.
OMG! I've been crazy busy throwing a bridal shower out of town, and then being sick, and I'm just now catching up on Bites. I can't believe yall have my peeps up! Whoo! Haha... Now maybe my neighbors will recognize this, and think I'm no longer crazy for coming outside and sitting in the parking lot while photographing peeps on a plate in the grass. (I have ZERO light coming in my West End apartment) Sadly most of the peeps have been consumed. They hold up pretty well, though not as well as the store-bought ones. But I guess that's what you get without preservatives right? I'll be making these again on Friday or Saturday right before Easter to share with my mom in KY.
AND, FYI, my boyfriend wouldn't stop telling me the one in the background looks like a walrus and not a Peep.
*For those interested in trying these out they are NOT hard I swear, I swear! I'm a homemade marshmallow junkie, so I had a bit of practice. And the crazy yellow color is Wilton candy sprinkles purchased at Michaels.
