I ate well this weekend (including this shrimp in green sauce I made on Friday, not to mention my Sky Blue brunch) and experienced lots of warm and fuzzy feelings toward my East Nashville 'hood.
On Saturday night, I went to Zavós with a bunch of lady friends. People were feeling tight in their budget areas but still wanted to enjoy a meal out with food, drinks and conversation (about boys!).
I realize Jack had expressed his excitement about this little Greek eatery earlier this year, but little did I know he was working on yet another post yesterday, while I was hard at work on this one. Still, Zavós was so good that I wanted to chime in.
The place was pretty packed when we arrived, but we nabbed a spot at one of the long, tall tables on the left-hand wall and made quick work of the lean and mean menu. We shared a Mediterranean platter--feta, hummus, tzaziki, red peppers and an excellent eggplant dip served with warm pita--and I ordered the special: Pastitsio, a Greek baked pasta dish comprised of ziti coated in bechamel layered with Angus beef Bolognese. The dish was comforting and hearty, and the half portion (at only $7) was more than enough.
The best thing about Zavós is that all the food tastes home-cooked--in the best possible way. It is rustic and unpretentious, and priced to sell. This is exactly the kind of place that will thrive in these rough times--when people want to go to a cool place, have a nice meal and smile when the check comes.
