Sky Blue Coffee & Bistro: Kinda Awesome

Recently the Marché bum rush has gotten a bit out of hand. Now, don't get me wrong--the place is always worth the wait, but sometimes my slightly hungover self wants to resist the descent into crankiness and constant moans of, "Who are these people?! Why don't they go back to where they came from!" that inevitably arise from a wait over half an hour.

A couple of weeks ago at bowling league, our teammate mentioned that he and his wife had brunched at Sky Blue Coffee & Bistro, the Edgefield café currently occupying the insanely charming space that once housed the short-lived Vino. This weekend we decided to try it out, and it was kind of awesome.

The food was solid eggs-omelets-pancakes-French toast fare, but with some innovative twists. I chowed down on brisket Benedict and my man delved into an insane combination of biscuits, sausage gravy, potatoes, eggs and cheese, all tossed together in a bowl. It was a little like this, but less sad. Oh, and they serve Drew's Brews.

Overall, the food was solid. But what I really loved about this place was the neighborhood feel. The dining room was packed, so we sat outside, and it was amazing to see how many parties were walking to brunch. (I also think this might be the first Nashville restaurant I've seen without a parking lot.) The waiters, who were incredibly cheerful and accommodating, seemed to know the regulars, and the whole place just had this cozy, friendly vibe. Like I said, kinda awesome.

We walked home through beautiful Edgefield, Sunday NY Times under my arm. Yuppie heaven.

In other news: Our waiter informed us that Sky Blue just got their wine license--mimosas for all!

Sky Blue is the best! I eat there every weekend for brunch (also with a copy of the NYTimes under my arm). The service and food are unmatched.

I agree on the Marche line/wait. Sometimes it is just too long for my headache to wait. Margot is my hands down fave brunch spot; though sometimes, I just can't plan ahead to get a reservation and miss that 11 AM barstool opportunity.
Sky Blue provides a much needed alternative, as do the otehr brunch spots on the East side.

This place is run by a great big drunk, i wouldn't eat her food if it was the last stuff on earth, she doesnt follow food safety fundamentals, and treats her staff like crap. if that is something you would like to support, go right ahead. im not into getting food poisoning (from a fellow restauranteur)

The above comment is right on the money. Once the "drunk" starting letting the majority of her staff go ( for her own personal reasons ), what few were left were fighting a losing battle. It's a damn shame, too, because, at one point, this place had the makings of something special.

Dear n/a and Anonymous,
Instead of hiding behind a cloak of anonymity and sounding like vindictive disgruntled ex-employees, if there are serious health and food safety violations please report the restaurant to metro health inspector for the public good.

I have been a regular customer of Sky Blue for the last six months or so. I have always loved it but lately I find the food and service is becoming poor. the last time I was there I felt like an intruder. The wait staff seemed irritated that they had a customer. There was no warm greeting which always was a plus for this cafe. My eggs benedict arrived eggs overcooked with what looked liked old or at least cold hollandaise. The potatoes were old and obvioulsly had been reheated in a microwave. When I sent the food back they made a half-hearted attempt at resolving the problem. Even though I was a dissatisfied customer I was still charged 2.95 for one cup of coffee. Sadly I will not return to this cafe even though it is in my neighborhood. I also called all the friends I had reccommended it too and asked them to reconsider my reccomendation. I simply cannot find decent caring service in this city.
