NFL Stars Trade Astroturf for Wheatgrass Saturday at Whole Foods

Posted by Jim Ridley on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 11:18 AM

Former Titan Eddie George and former Pittsburgh Steelers Tim Lester and Jerome Bettis will be at the Green Hills Whole Foods Saturday to huddle over a common cause: wheatgrass.

According to Whole Foods marketing director Brittany Conner, Lester and Bettis are both so enamored of the health attibutes of wheatgrass--the tender young shoots of the wheat plant, charged by believers with benefits ranging from weight loss to cancer prevention--that they're showing up with George at the Gro Agro Wheatgrass booth during Whole Foods' Local Vendor Demo Day.

The Demo Day festivities start at 3 p.m., and we've got a full list of participating vendors after the jump. They'll provide everything from cheesecake to chocolate, from Laura Button's raw foods to Mountain Jim's Ice Cream. Among the visiting vendors is rancher Will Harris, whose White Oak Pastures has won raves for its humane methods and grassfed beef.

But the entire day sounds like great fun. From noon to 2 p.m., the store's "Giving Grill" will serve hamburgers, veggie burgers or turkey dogs with chips and drink for a $5 donation to the Whole Planet Foundation. Then, at 6 p.m., acclaimed country-rock vocalist Caitlin Rose will perform a free concert.

We've heard there'll be another out-of-town VIP at the event, but we can't say who. Now, about those vendors....

UPDATE: Caitlin Rose is at 4 p.m. One more reason to arrive early!
