The Sweetest Thing: Simple Syrup Arrives at Bongo East

Posted by on Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 6:03 AM

About a year-and-a-half ago I gave up fake sugar (in part due to the influence of my culinary guru and spiritual advisor Michael Pollan). But last summer I made an exception for Splenda in my iced caffeinated beverages--regular sugar just doesn't dissolve fast enough. This year, I'm more committed to the chemical-free cause, and I've been spending a lot of time stirring, and stirring, to incorporate those pesky little granules into my rapidly warming beverages. It's very trying. (Gotta love those First World problems!)

So, you can imagine my joy when I arrived at Bongo Java East yesterday and spotted a pump bottle of simple syrup on the fixins bar. The handwritten label said, "Simple Syrup!"--the exclamation point expressing a level of unbridled enthusiasm appropriate for an item that is, no doubt, is warming many hearts across the East Side as we speak. Hoorah!
