Among the food businesses popping up between the bricks in the sidewalk in Germantown, Mignon and A.E. François' Cupcake Collection just might be the sweetest. Hardly a person enters the century-old house that Mignon doesn't ask their name, and more than a few leave with a hug. Fifty pounds of sugar go into the 1,000 cupcakes that leave the family bakery every day, but it's the warmth of the Françoises--five of whom are working the store at any given minute--that draws people back to this delicious anachronism of a Mom-and-pop shop. Did I mention that A.E. was a sharp-shooter? Yeah, it's not your average cupcakery. Jim Ridley tells more of the story in the Scene's inaugural People Issue
