This week's Scene is our inaugural People Issue, showcasing two dozen or so of the most interesting personalities we know. Among the profiles are several characters who have contributed to the growing diversity of the city's dining landscape.
Shiva Karimy is one of the most interesting people I know. Also known as Mrs. Fat Mo, the First Lady of Burgers and the genie behind Genie's Persian Palace, Shiva planned to study medicine, until she met a dashing rug trader, who diverted her path from medical school in Istanbul to Vienna and ultimately to a chain of drive-throughs in Music City. Shiva's story is just one of the remarkable personal histories you'll find in this week's paper.
After reading about the Karimys' take on the American dream, swing by Genie's Persian Palace and get their take on Middle Eastern food. Don't be surprised if Shiva offers you a tour of the buffet, with all its fesenjans, khoreshts and homemade feta and butter. If you're lucky, you'll get there on a day when she has made a fresh rollette. If you ask nicely, she might share a little of her story with you, too.

Any opinions on Genie's Persian Palace? After reading they are making their own feta my interest was peaked.
I wouldn't be doing the lunch buffet so I'd like to know what the thoughts are of the menu items?
I've never been able to wait long enough to order off the menu, but the fesenjan was delicious, and ask if there's a rollette available.
Is a rollette a grilled eggplant slice rolled around a walnut cilantro filling?
No, mercifully. At Genie's, a rollette is a fluffy cake rolled around whipped cream.
They have a menu at Genie's?
I'm only game for the lunch buffet since I work in B'Wood. What I like about the buffet is the items change pretty regulary, but the kebobs are always a mainstay. When we visit they usually bring us a sword full of kebobs to feast upon.
Also, they have a sweet cake that is unreal. I don't know the name, but it's usually in a glass / ceramic dish and looks like cornbread that is soaking in some type of sugar syrup. So good.
A couple guys I work with swear by the mushroom soup, I prefer the tomato & basil soup (not a mushroom guy). Haven't tried the feta, but I'm pretty sure its good if it comes from Genie's.
Dippin' I'm with you, they have a menu at Genie's? I've always just gone with the buffet, I also think it's more economical to go with the buffet rather than menu items which seem a bit pricier to me.
When we used to go with friends who hadn't been there, Mr. Mo would individually walk each person through the buffet, which rice went with which entree, etc. They're both such wonderful people.
