Cravings: Looking for the Best Fish and Chips in Town

I really need to stop watching Food Network after 10 p.m. It leads to cravings. Last night, my man, my cat (hi Doug!) and I ended up watching an episode of Throwdown with Bobby Flay. It was a battle for fish and chips supremacy between Bobby and A Salt and Battery in the West Village. Needless to say, I found my mouth watering.

I know Scene editor Pete Kotz swears by the version at Dan McGuinness, but does anyone know of anywhere else in town with a solid version? Extra points for homemade tartar sauce.

A Salt and Battery in Manhattan and the Chipshops in Brooklyn follow the English style, which is to say: salt and vinegar and NOT tartar sauce. Tartar sauce is for Cap'n D's or Arthur Treacher's or a catfish fry.
Dan McG's is about the best I've had in town, and it stacks up nicely to the UK. I'm not in love with the batter at Batter'd and Fried.
UK chip shops are the refined product of generations of tasty, greasy eats, and cannot be improved upon. I'd love to see a place that does cod, haddock, good chips, lots of malt vinegar, and mushy peas, but I'll pass on the tartar sauce.

I'll throw a curve here - Blackstone has the best in Nashville (and yes, I've had DM's). They also have the best malt vinegar in town, by far, which is just as important as the fish and the chips in the grand equation in my book.
Tartar sauce? that was a joke, right?

McCreary's Irish Pub in downtown Franklin has really good Fish and Chips. It is a small little place across from the downtown movie theater. They have vinegar and tarter sauce for your liking. The beer is pretty good as well.

The fish and chips at the the grill at Whole Foods is really really good. I often find myself craving it. I don't know how authentic it is but whatever fish they use has a great flavor.

I'll second SL here and give my vote to Blackstone. I haven't had a large amount of fish n' chips in this town but theirs is my favorite for sure. Great beer batter, perfectly cooked, and the malt vinegar is awesome.

Mirror has a fantastic fish and chips. Does anyone around here wrap it in newspaper?

I'll also vote for Blackstone. Not only do they have good fish 'n chips, but they have a great apple sauce that is made in house.
Only had the grouper tenders at Batter'd & Fried, but I am never full when I leave there. Also, the grouper tenders get really soggy for some reason?
After visiting London, I can vouch for the goodness of true fish & chips. Had them just about every day I was there.

I miss the Sherlock Holmes Pub...

A Salt and Battery definitely served tartar sauce on throwdown...
What can I say? I'm a sucker for a mayo-based sauce paired with something fried.

I can get ketchup for my prime rib on request, too, Lee.

I know that it is a chain but I ended up in a Red Robin and did not want a burger so I tried the fish and chips and was really surprised.
Large pieces and very crisp.
Even after the vinegar it was still crisp.
just a thought

misses the Sherlock Holmes pub as well...Terry and Margaret, the mashed peas, the comically spotty service, the fish and chips. Was at Exit/in last night in fact and glanced through the window at the former pub....

It's pretty much a three-way tie for me in quality: Dan McGuinness, Blackstone and the Whole Foods counter. (Radius10's was really good, R.I.P.) But for cheapness and access, you can't beat Dan McG's Wednesday lunch special for $6.
And dammit, I'll draw a line in the sand (or surf) right now and say it proudly:
I. Love. Captain D's.

I'm on the Blackstone bus. I also really like the fish and chips at McCabe.

I've been to A Salt and Battery and they definitely serve tartar sauce. I'm sure it's to satiate the American crowd. I'm such a sucker for malt vinegar on fries. Mmmm...reminds me of my days growing up in New England.
Anyway, I still haven't found any place that blows my mind, but Dan McGuinness will do when I'm craving some fish and chips.

I love DM's fish and chips, but then again I also think Captain D's are pretty good (at least on the fish part). Fwiw, I think Red Robin falls somewhere in the middle.

My Irish friend swears by Dan McGuiness' fish and chips. She says their fish and chips is the best one's she's had outside of Dublin.

I also keep hearing about a pub in Lebanon frequented by British ex-pats that's supposed to have kick-ass fish and chips. Is it The Pond?

Had Cracker Barrel's fish fry tonight. Not bad, although the cod was way overcooked. Good catfish, though—tender strips in crisp cornmeal breading.

Red Robin's fish & chips is a real sleeper. Better than othe ones a Bonefish at less the cost.

Cool Springs Brewery in Cool Springs is soon to have authentic English Fish & Chips. How authentic? The owners are British his father had a very sucessful Fish & Chip shop for 30 years in the UK and is training the kitchen staff how to make them. They even intend to find marrowfat peas in order to make true mushy peas and will be using cod or haddock. Beat that!

Fleet Street Pub has the best fish & chips. Plus, in-house made tartar sauce.
