Hey, Food Network! Do You Know Jack?

Posted by Carrington Fox on Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 6:22 AM

The man in the big hat is trying to lure the Food Network to Nashville. Jack Cawthon, the good guy in the black hat behind Jack's Bar-B-Que, says he has been going to the Apple store to learn to use iMovie, and he's gotten "good enough" to launch a few clips on YouTube. This winter he posted an 8-minute travelogue (complete with bloopers), of himself cruising Lower Broad, the Times Square of Music City. In the intro, Cawthon makes a hospitable shout-out to the Food Network, inviting them to Nashville.

"What you got cookin', Food Network? How 'bout cooking something up with me down here in Nashville, TN, on Lower Broad at Jack's Bar-B-Que," Cawthon drawls in the opening lines of the video.

A longtime downtown tourism booster who recently headed up the downtown holiday decoration contest, Cawthon says he just threw the video out there for the heck of it. Ideally, he says, Food Network will pick up the challenge and send someone to check out his 15-year-old landmark restaurant with neon pigs flying over Lower Broad--maybe Bobby Flay or "that real cool guy with the punked-out hair." So far he hasn't received an R.S.V.P.

"If they ever do come," Cawthon says, "I've got an ideal kitchen upstairs in my store that backs up to the Ryman. I've always envisioned if they come we could cook around the pit. It would make a real good scene."

In the current spirit of petitioning, if you want to second Jack's invitation to the Food Network, chime in below. Better yet, if you have a direct line to Bob Tuschman, senior vice president of programming at the Food Network--where employee email addresses follow the formula of first initial plus last name at foodnetwork dot com--you might put a bug in his ear.

If you're looking for Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives to come to Nashville, Bob Tuschman isn't the way to go.
DDD is produced by David Page of "Page Productions". Contact them at 763.383.9400 or e-mail info@pageprod.com.
The direct DDD request email address is DDDinfo@mac.com.
If you want some other show to visit, then yeah, maybe contact Bob. I'm a huge supporter of grass roots movements, so good luck!

If I remember correctly, Fieri told us at the Jack that the producers of DDD had checked out Prince's as a potential location (at his behest...he is a fan), but they decided "no".

I was just at the book signing “Where The Locals Eat Nashville” Jack’s got best category in BBQ and Prince’s got best hot chicken. We both provided food along with others at the reception at Davis Kidd. Why don’t we invite Prince’s to come down and be Jack’s guest on Lower Broad? Then we could have a real throw down in the Ally by the Ryman for Food Network; I think someone suggested that one time, that would be a huge draw, I don’t mind sharing the stage. Check out the book signing reception on youtube at Davis Kidd. The book “ Where the Locals Eat in Nashville”

What a fabulous idea! I can't imagine a better duo to give viewers a taste (no pun intended) of some true Nashville food gems! Food-wise, personality-wise, entertainment-wise, this is the perfect event...Food Network, you've got to do this!

Jack's..........WOW! And the chess pie is to die for. I've never had a bad meal there. Prince's....ditto. I always have a hankerin' for superb fried chicken!
These two establishments don't get the recognition deserved.

Their loss. The show needs Prince's more than Prince's needs the show.
Sign me up for the Jack's petition.

Rachael Ray came to Nashville at one point for a show - and even visited lower broad. Anybody else remember that? it may have been her $40/a day show.

I can think of no better reason for a hodown than having that quintesential southern gentleman, Jack, host Prince's and the Food Network in Ryman Alley. Country music, in the shade of the historic Ryman, Jack's, the ultimate comfort food, and Prince's with the best Hot chicken in the world right here in Music City, USA. What a combo!

Yes bring Food Network to Nashville. They need to try out the local BBQ and chicken.

The Food Network has been to Nashville a few times - Rachael Ray did $40 a day here (she went to F. Scott's, Bongo Java, and visited downtown), Bobby Flay has done Throwdowns with Las Paletas and the Loveless and Paula Deen's sons were here when they had that road trip show.
Not to be all conspiracy theorist here, but could the ignoring of Jack's have something to do with TN's first couple of BBQ the Neeleys already having a few shows on FN?

Jack's and Prince's, what a combination! Can you imagine the King of "Q" and the best "Hot Chicken" in the world teaming up for a hot time in the Ryman Alley.
Jack is my man. He will have the alley jumping with all of his rowdy friends. Food Network and Bobby Flay, this is a chance of a lifetime. Don't miss out. Come on down to "Jack's In The Alley" and have the show of your life.

Jacks and Prince's, quite frankly, serve up the best food I've EVER put in my mouth. I think I'll go get some bbq right now...And the owners are so fantastic! This would truly be the greatest show.

Both Jack's and Prince's embody the spirit of the city which they feed -- and that is what the Food Network is all about... or should be. With the growing number of upscale dining options corresponding to Nashville's continued development as a major metropolis, Jack's and Prince's have retained their local, down-home flavor at affordable prices and thus have become ever-more important in preserving the city's history and heart.

A poem by Jolly Holly...
Once you go Jack’s
You never go back
Come on Food Network
Give yourself a perk
Pigs over Broadway
It’ll be a fun day
Smokey meat flavor
Best you’ll ever savor
Come to the meat-man’s hood
For a show that’s lip-smacking good!
You don’t know what your miss’n
Til you spend time in Jack’s kitchen
Come on down Food Network
Try Jack's smoked turk
You’ll just love Jack’s meat
It’ll be the best you’ll ever eat!!!
