Seldom does the use of an adverb matter more than at a Bacchanalian Society of Nashville event, where smelling "good" and smelling "well" are entirely different matters altogether.
A BSN event goes like this:
A team of up to three people brings three bottles of the same wine from a designated category. Two of the team's bottles are opened, numbered, covered and set out to taste, while the third bottle goes into the kitty for the evening's winner. Throughout the evening, guests sniff, sip and swill a wide variety of varietals, and conclude by voting for their favorite. The team that brings the highest-scoring wine takes home the spoils.
TPAC will host just such an event on Jan. 22, when participants are invited to bring an Australian red. The $10 admission fee ($15 at the door) benefits TPAC's Marquee Club. The event is restricted to guests 21 and up, and IDs will be checked at the door. Register online at bacchsociety.com. The informal event kicks off at 7 p.m. in the Andrew Jackson Hall lobby.

Has anyone ever done this? I hear it gets pretty crazy. Something about putting the bottles in bags makes people forget what and how much they are drinking.
Yes, they do get a little wild. Last one took place at Cheekwood and there was about 900 people and people were turned away at the door. So, that is 900 bottles of wine, maybe more. Personally, I've never had good luck with Aust. reds, so I'll be passing on this one.
Also, I think they should have a designated driver entrance fee that is either free or $5 max. Just a thought.
My sister and some friends attempted to go to the last event held at Cheekwood. It was a total cluster! I assume that the people who got in had a great time, but the organizer seemed to have absolutely no concept of how many people would show up. A lot of people were turned away very disappointed.
Not saying that I won't give it a chance, though!
Tonight's event has 1200 people preregistered, and they will cap the event at 1300 (due to capacity, I'm sure). Just FYI.
I went to this last year at Cheekwood and thought it was awful. My friends and I were serious about tasting and rating, but we were definitely in the minority. It seemed like most others were just interested in getting drunk. It was really obnoxious. People were just picking up the bottles from the tables and taking them to a corner and having little private parties with their friends. As they got drunker, they started to drop the bottles, so there was glass and red wine all over the floors. I even saw a girl pick up a spit urn and drink out of it. I am totally serious.
For the sake of those that have purchased tickets this year, all I can hope is that the planners learned from that mess.
