English Only: "A Looney Tunes Idea" in Any Language

Posted by Carrington Fox on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 12:18 PM

This may look like veteran-journalist-turned-entrepreneur Carrie Ferguson Weir, but it's actually her fictional alter ego Carmen Miranda Remolino, a.k.a. "The Tornado." The American of Cuban descent and founder of Los Pollitos Dicen children's clothing company says--in a fluent-but-faux accent--she's "angry and sad about the short-sightedness and ugliness that the English Only proposition has brought out" in her adopted hometown.

Carrie, a.k.a. Carmen, says to vote "no y no," or be prepared to learn to order your food in Spanish.

Carrie! I mean Miranda! This is brilliant! All these years later, though, and I've never gotten around to asking how a Cuban ended up with the name Carrie Ferguson.

I must know you fluffernutter, so I will answer:
Carrie equals Americanized "Caridad'' or "Cary" -- the patron saint of Cuba, homeland of my mother. The Ferguson belongs to an American Romeo of Scottish descent, who romanced my hot tamale mother in Miami. I was raised by the crazy, looney tune Cubans in Miami. Don't hold that against me. I speak English fluently too.

And you know how you get a name like Fluffernutter? Cover a Nicki Pendleton with marshmallow sauce, and voilà!
