Food Fight!

This week's Scene cover story is a series of knock-down-drag-out fights over our favorite foods. Tracy Moore and Steve Haruch duke it out over whether Marché serves a better BLT than Mitchell Delicatessen. Cleveland Pete backs Dan McGuinness' fried fish, while Mr. Pink casts his vote for Eastside's O.G. King fish sandwich. It's a brutal, no-holds-barred issue, especially when Patrick Rodgers socks it to Jack Silverman in the matter of Pied Piper Creamery vs. Mike's Ice Cream. La Hacienda-lovin' Brent Rolen will never be the same after I knocked him out with my compelling case for the Baja Burrito fish taco.

Writing this issue was a lot of fun, as we ate our favorite foods and worked out a lot of personal aggression. Needless to say, we're ready to do battle again. When we go to the mattresses next time, what foods would you like to see pitted against each other?

No Chicken Tenders fight to the death? Come on guys, we have so many options (Otter's, McDoogal's, Chicken Nicks', J. Alexanders, Chili's, etc.)

Come on this is Nashville, home of hot chicken and a meat and 3 mecca.
Prince v Bolton just sounds like a heavy weight fight.

I don't understand face offs of mixed genres, ala hot fish sandwich (King Fish) vs Irish Pub fish. Shouldn't that be Joe's vs East Side and Blackstone vs Dan McGuinness? at least you could compare mustard to mustard and vinegar to vinegar that way.
And might I suggest omitting Prince's from any hot chicken comparisons for the simple fact that we should finally just acknowledge they're the standard. Leave the comparisons for the others to fight over who's got the right to say they're leading for second.
as for what's left to compare, I would suggest
the buffets of Best of India or Bombay Palace vs. Cuisine of India; and finally, Jasmine vs Basil's.

Response to this has already been so strong that a Round 2 is almost certain. Chicken tenders and meat-and-three sound like viable contenders.
Prince's vs. Bolton's is like Ali vs. Kimbo Slice. No contest. Maybe Dee's, since Reggie Crowder got his training in Hell's Kitchen.

Nuh-uh, Woodlands is the best Indian buffet. No contest.
Best cheap Mexican? (excuse the oxymoron) Las Palmas vs. Las Maracas? I went to Las Maracas for the first time last night and I was so incredibly underwhelmed and disappointed that I'm surprised the place is so popular with the East Enders. The salsa was good, but so full of garlic that I woke up dying of thirst at 2:30 this morning. Not cool. I won't cheat on Los Rosales again.

Woodlands is awful.
Bad naan. No meat. No pakora. Worst Indian I've had in Nashville.
Las Americas is good cheap Mexican.

If nothing else, I was glad to see the Mitchell B.L.T. get its rightful recognition. It is the best B.L.T. that I have ever tasted, and probably one of the best sandwiches of any kind that I've ever had.
The Benton's bacon is obviously a huge factor. And I think this is the best possible application of Benton's bacon. Honestly, I'm not such a huge fan of Benton's eaten by itself, just because it's so overwhelmingly smoky. But on this sandwich it is absolutely perfect. It's thick and hearty enough to serve as the meat of the sandwich, and not just a complementary garnish. And as with any sandwich, the bread is a huge factor as well. The toasted Silkes hoagie roll is definitely Mitchell's secret weapon, and it's never better than with the B.L.T., where it prefectly manages the contents of the sandwich and also tastes delicious.
I have not had the B.L.T. at Marche, but I can't imagine that it could compare to the one at Mitchell. If you like B.L.T.s and you have not had the one at Mitchell, do yourself and favor and make the trip. You will not be disppointed.

Best BLT in Nashville? The "Chef's Prime Rib" at John A's over by Opryland. I almost hate to let the secret out. Prime rib, Black Forest Ham, thick-cut Applewood bacon, pepperjack and swiss cheese. I have had the Mitchell's Deli version and it is damn good but this is better. Be sure and order it with the sweet potato fries.

You know, you make a good point BP. Sounds more like a club sandwich, which is actually what it is- oops! Either way, it's one of the best sandwiches I have ever had...

This is a random question but does anyone know of a good catfish place around here, preferably BYOB? Seems like I read about one in either Dickson or Ashland City but I can't remember. Thanks!

The Catfish Kitchen is in Burns, TN, which is just past Montgomery Bell State Park on Hwy 70. It's damn good catfish. Not sure about their BYOB policy, though.

As a lover of all things fried and dipped in sauce, I'm putting my hat in the ring for the chicken tender throwdown. I've even got a ref shirt that I can wear...sleeves are optional.

Can't say I've ever seen anyone bring their own to the Catfish place in Burns. Honestly, it's so good (and so much food), you're better off sipping tea and saving room for everything. And don't skimp on the chow chow or whatever they call it.

Riverview restaurant on the Ashland City highway by the old bridge is BYO. I haven't eaten there in a about 5 years. The catfish was great -- hot, salty, greasy -- and the yeast rolls were good, vegetables and salads average. Great view, though. I bet it's gorgeous about right now. I sense a road trip coming!

Riverview sells beer now, as of a couple years ago. IMO, their offerings pale in comparison to the place in Burns, except for the view.
