Trader Joe's Opening Nov. 7

Posted by Carrington Fox on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 5:05 AM

As if the election weren’t divisive enough, in just over a week—when Trader Joe’s opens in Green Hills—you’re going to have to choose up sides at the grocery store, too. Are you a Whole Foods 365-brand green-bagger? A Kroger Cost Cutter? Or a Trader Joe’s true believer, worshipping at the private-labeled feet of Trader Darwin, Trader José and Trader Giotto, the kitschy grocer’s cheery nameplates?

Trader Joe’s will start wholesale campaigning for your retail love at 9 a.m. Nov. 7, when the 50-year-old happy Hawaiian-themed grocer opens its first Tennessee store, in the former Wild Oats. Customers who get in line before 8:30 a.m. will receive goodie bags and a chance to cut the ceremonial lei.

Located at 3909 Hillsboro Pike (phone: 297-6560), Trader Joe's will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

As always, if you get there before we do, please report back on Bites.

I'm the sort of shopper that does not enjoy idling for 30 minutes on Hillsboro inching my way towards that location. Trader Joes is no different than World Market to me. I prefer to shop where I can make a difference, not to wear a badge of vanity.
Would you like extra melamine in your food?

I also would have preferred a more convenient location for TJ's, but I'll probably combine a TJ's run with my monthly Whole Foods visit. Though if this store is anything like the TJ's I visited in Las Vegas, I won't be back. That place reminded me of a rundown Piggly Wiggly. It was dirty, the lighting was bad, and the selection of produce was pathetic. It's not a place I could do all of my shopping; it's definitely only worthy of a periodic trip.

None of the TJ's have a decent produce selection, but that's not their thing. They don't pretend to be a one-stop grocery, which is why they almost always open near a decent grocery store - so that you'll go to both.
That said, I'm staying away for two months. It's gonna be the California Pizza Kitchen stampede all over again.

Interestingly, none of the promotional materials I've received mention produce -- to the point that I called the company to confirm that they do actually carry veggies.

I just can't fathom the point of negotiating that dinky parking lot unless/until there's wine in the store to go with all that wonderful cheese. Although the thought of their cheese selection does make me wistful. (Really miss Wild Oats' selection, far more worldly than the clutter I see at Whole Foods.)
Will they be sending out the fearless flyer to Nashvillians soon or do we have to sign up for it?
