In our search for this year's Pumpkin Perfection, we visited Howell's produce stand, the Silicon Valley of pumpkin vendors. Every year, Howell's has the latest pumpkin genetic and hybridizing innovations. In the past, we've been early adopters of precious Baby Boo punkins and adorable plump Cinderella-carriage pumpkins.

This year, the Woods, for whom Halloween is the new Christmas, couldn't resist the new warty pumpkins.

How about those awesome scabs? And don't you love the pustulated pumpkin below? Can you think of a better base for an ogre or a witch face?

Here's a "cellulite" pumpkin—imagine the horrible possibilities if you bought two of them.

Howell's produce has two locations in Green Hills: Glen Echo Road across from the post office, and Hillsboro Road at Sharondale, lawn of the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Halloween is the new Christmas, indeed. It's like Thanksgiving and Mardi Gras rolled into one.
Is there any advantage to actually cooking a pumpkin instead of using the canned variety?

We bought our pumpkin at the Howell's stand behind Hillsboro High, and I think we might have been had. We paid $20 for a big, bright traditional orange, carving pumpkin. Is that overkill? My friend bought hers at Wal-Mart; same size only $5. Now I hate Wal-Mart as much as the next foodie, but that is some savings in these hard times! I am trying to sleep soundly knowing that I'm supporting a local business, but ouch!
Anybody else have feedback on pumpkin prices this year?

The Howell's satellite locations are always a bit higher than their main location at the downtown farmers market. It's worth the trip, I've found pumpkins are about $5 - $10 cheaper. It ain't Walmart, but then again, that's a good thing right?

Not a punkin-to-punkin comparison, but Whole Foods has some ginormous specimens--big enough to imprison your spouse--for $79.
