Here's the culinary sub-set of the swag bag offered to credentialed media attending Debate '08 at Belmont University on Tuesday night. Front and center is a GooGoo. Tucked in above that is a pair of Tennessee T-Cakes. Behind them is a MoonPie.

The backbone is a packet of M&Ms. Really? Tennessee and M&Ms? It's true that Milky Way Farm, the magnificent thoroughbred farm of Frank Mars, founder of M&M/Mars, lies in the folds of the beautiful rolling landscape around Pulaski. But the Mars family hailed from Chicago and lived here just a couple of years, and the candy was never produced in Tennessee. The Marses aren't even buried here.

Surely there's a better culinary representation of the state. What other smallish food product would have been a good addition to the bags?

Shot-sized bottles of Jack and George, obviously.

Since it's the pet food division of Mars that's based in this area, I suppose it would have been more appropriate to put a little packet of that Cesar dog food in there. They do promote its quality...

I was going to say Kelley's Katch paddlefish caviar, but keeping it properly chilled would have been quite a challenge. How about a slab of Benton's bacon?

Jim Voorhies in da hizzie.
Actually, I miswrote that poorly. I meant, the PR intern assigned to the food swag bags. As for minions, I've always thought it sounded like a portmanteau word for minced onions. And who doesn't need more of those?
