City Paper Restaurant Retraction

Posted by PJ Tobia on Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 1:16 PM

(Dear City Paper: I wrote this correction for you. Feel free to cut and paste it into your “e-paper” or whatever it is you’re publishing these days. Ciao!)

In today’s City Paper restaurant review “Meatless in Nashville,” news correspondent William Williams writes, “Bethel, the underrated Ethiopian eatery in Midtown, offers a berbere-glorious meat-free lunch buffet on Wednesdays.” If Williams had been reading Bites, he’d have known that Bethel closed its doors for good over a month ago and hasn't served so much as a glass of water since.

Also, he probably shouldn’t have quoted those three random diners at the end of the story. While not technically an error, it added nothing and we still regret it.

Added nothing? On the contrary, it proved that at least two people not of Indian descent (one being a native Southerner!) can enjoy Indian food that does not have meat. This will no doubt increase the percentage of average Northern European Americans who visit the restaurant during the week from 75% to 75.01%.

Worst Indian lunch buffet I've had in Nashville.

I ate there once and got a belly ache. Then later that afternoon, Hendersonville got a tornado. I think I'll steer clear next time.

Wow. Woodlands is my favorite Indian restaurant in town by a significant margin.

It’s funny, our office is similarly divided about this Woodlands. We have a couple of hardcore devotees—namely Pink and Silverman—and a group who won’t even go near the place. I haven’t tried Woodlands, but that’s only because I really like the lamb over at that place next to Pizza Perfect on 21st. When I crave Indian at lunch, that’s where I go.

Never had a bad meal there. Haters can eat a dosa, as far as I'm concerned.

One word: Uppma. Order it off the menu if it's not on the buffet. It's the reason I go to Woodlands. Don't fear the phrase "spiced cream of wheat." Ask for extra peppers.
You won't be sorry, especially if you're looking for a savory brunch after a long night.

This may be the first time I have agreed with Tobin the Gnome. Interestingly, Woodlands is the only place I have ever dined with Tobin the Gnome.

The Woodlands requires some brave navigation around the menu to have a good experience.
I really enjoy their food and find it to be the best vegetarian option in the city.

Just to clarify, my disdain was for the City Paper only. I LOVE Woodlands. It's the only Indian place I eat any more.

Pancho just had a lovely lunch at Woodlands. Still have a skip in the old step too.

I think my biggest disapointment with Woodlands was the Naan. Naan & Pakora are two-thirds of the reason I go for Indian.

Y'all are on crack. Woodlands has been nothing but good-to-great every time I've been. Then again, naan and pakora don't mean that much to me. They had me at sag paneer.
