Flies, Fly Balls and Frijoles

It took a little longer than originally anticipated, but it looks like Judge Bean's Frijoles will open in the former location of Hap Townes legendary restaurant by next week. Aubrey Bean, whose Judge Beans Bar-B-Que is a little bit of Texas at the north end of The Gulch, is expanding his brisket empire to 493 Humphreys Street.

Judge Bean's Frijoles will be open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and will serve breakfast tacos as well as the Texas-style barbecue brisket that has made the 12th Avenue North restaurant a local landmark. Bean says he's working on getting a deck built like he used to have back at his original location near the fairgrounds (Bean relocated to The Gulch a couple years ago), and he promises he'll hang his trademark plastic bags of water to distract the flies from people's food.

Located at the dead end of Chestnut Street, Frijoles sits practically in centerfield of Greer Stadium, says Bean, who plans to stay open late on days the Sounds play. "You can bring your own beer," he says. "You can't see the game, but you can hear it."
