Best InstallationErika Johnson, "Curtain," Parthenon
One sign you aren't in New York: No one puts up the millions of dollars to fabricate massive artworks out of tons of metal. So the locals have to make do with humble materials or a humble scale. Opting for an ambitious scope, Erika Johnson filled a long gallery in the Parthenon with a serpentine wall of shower curtains, each documenting a few decades of life in America and the exploding welter of information we deal with. At turns political and deeply personal, it was one of the most sweeping statements turned in by a Nashville artist all year. —DAVID MADDOX
