Best of Nashville 2006 Readers' Poll
Sign My Yearbook?

High school’s supposed to be so great. The best years of your life. Happy days. But unless you were the quarterback—or at least a cheerleader dating the quarterback—high school probably sucked for you, too. You had acne, the wrong kind of car and bad grades. Or you had grades that were too good, no car and a boyfriend with acne. Whatever the reasons, high school was hard.

But at the end, you got that yearbook with all those snapshots making it look like you spent four years hanging out of convertibles rather than sulking in a corner of the cafeteria nursing a bottle of SunnyD with the rest of the Most-Likely-to-Resent-Adolescence clique. What a load.

In our opinion, high school yearbooks—like youth—are wasted on the young, filled with pseudo-smiles from hormone-addled teens and pyramids of hugging cheerleaders who would just as soon scratch each other’s eyes out with their spirit fingers.

Why not publish a yearbook memorializing times that really are great? Like life after high school in a dynamic, diverse city?

This year, the Scene’s Best of Nashville issue takes the form of an adult yearbook. (No, that does not mean the Homecoming Queen posed nekkid.) It’s a scrapbook celebrating all that’s great about our city, particularly the homegrown successes that make Nashville unique. In these pages, we hope you recognize a few things you love and that you discover some things you’ve never heard of. And if the mood strikes, we encourage you to write cheesy notes on each other’s papers.
