Yep
So,
handsome young GOP “golden boy” Gus Puryear helped Dick Cheney master
debate and has been rewarded with a nomination for a federal judgeship
(“Elephant in the Room,” March 6). Man, you couldn’t make this stuff up
if you tried.

Rhio writes again
The real “elephant in the room” that the Scene should have done a front-page feature on is the $15 million lawsuit the Scene’s owner, Village Voice Media, recently lost in San Francisco in the battle of the alternative newspapers between SF Weekly and
the Bay Guardian.
After a five-week trial, jurors agreed with Guardian Publisher Bruce Brugmann’s claims that the SF Weekly purposely undercut the Guardian with bargain display-ad rates, then used cash infusions from its Phoenix-based parent company, Village Voice Media, to stay afloat.
Brugmann said the battle was a classic case of a national chain trying to squeeze out the little guy, and the competition was so unfair it could have pushed his paper, which he founded with his wife, out of business.
Although offering a lower price is the golden rule of good business, it can be illegal in California if a company purposely undercuts a rival with the specific intention of bankrupting the competition.
Jurors thought the SF Weekly’s actions were predatory, said Guardian executive editor Tim Redmond. Now that would’ve been a really good story for the Scene to feature!

Well, we laughed
I
have noticed with alarm how increasingly vulgar, sophomoric and mocking
the tone of your letters headlines has become. Last week you reached a
new low (Love/Hate Mail, March 6). How could you possibly think it was
acceptable to title a letter, “Take her out back and beat the shit out
of her”? This is wrong on so many levels. It is not much different in
tenor than the comment that a sportscaster recently made when she
“joked” about competitors lynching Tiger Woods in a back alley. Do you
think that printing such a callously flippant remark concerning the
very real problem of violence against women was funny? Grow up. Title
this letter: “Our sincere apologies.”

Bahil a blowhard
In
“Outlawing the Poor” (Feb. 21), downtown resident Ben Bahil is quoted
as saying, “I sacrifice a lot to live down here…. We scrape by
sometimes month to month, but we love living down here.”
Ben Bahil speaks from a position of privilege. He and his wife choose to live downtown and to be a one-car family. They can afford to make reducing their “carbon footprint” a priority in their lives, as opposed to, say, securing food and shelter. They may “scrape by” from month to month, but I seriously doubt they are one layoff, serious illness or natural disaster away from homelessness themselves.
The homeless men and women who live downtown, the downtown Bahil is “unapologetic” about “cleaning up,” are not so fortunate.
My
husband and I keep our heat set at 65 degrees and buy only fluorescent
light bulbs. This does not, however, relieve us of our duty to have
compassion for our fellow human beings, rather than reducing them to
eyesores that need to be “cleaned up.”

No goddess to me
I just wanted to comment on the “Ask the Advice Goddess” column. Are
you a licensed psychologist? A comedian? To me your advice seems less
than helpful. More like a bitter woman who uses this as an excuse to
lay into someone (mostly men) with over-the-top sarcasm and absurdity.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy reading your take on things, but I feel
that you are overqualified for this gig. I can see you as a writer for
some terrible sitcom, but I guess you have to walk before you can run.

Correction
In last week’s article “So Much Art, So Much Time,” we wrote that the Monet to Dali exhibit at the Frist Center features 18th and 19th century European art. That should have read 19th and 20th century. We
regret the error.
