State Rep. Beth Harwell, who wants to run for governor, is shamelessly grandstanding against “Bredesen’s Bunker,” the multimillion-dollar, underground banquet hall that first lady Andrea Conte is building at the governor’s mansion. In the hopes of embarrassing Democrats, Harwell, a Nashville Republican, is trying to force the House to vote on it.

Never mind that the House has already voted to fund it in previous sessions, and no one objected then.

Hobbsian rhetoric
Bill Hobbs, the mouthy state GOP flack, has the honor of becoming the first to make a repeat appearance in this column. Hobbs, whose denunciations of Barack Obama earned the enmity of his own party’s leaders, is at it again. And for his next trick, he spouted the same anti-Obama venom in that highly respected supermarket tabloid, The National Enquirer.

The article was headlined “OBAMA’S SECRETS” and promised to reveal “his close friendship with a terrorist” and his “big money deal with an accused felon,” not to mention his “screaming matches with wife over other women.”

Hobbs didn’t deliver on any of those counts but did allow as how he doesn’t believe Obama when he says he rejects Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

“Obama calls Farrakhan ‘Minister Farrakhan,’ ” Hobbs told the Enquirer. “He denounces him with one hand and shows he tacitly respects him with that title.”

Asked about the article, Hobbs takes pains to tell the Scene that he gave the interview before national Republican leaders came down on the state GOP for its notorious “Anti-Semites for Obama” press release.

“The National Enquirer interview was done on the first day of the media frenzy over the whole Obama press release thing,” Hobbs says. “It was done two weeks ago. It’s an old interview.”

Hobbs adds, “I can tell you this. The quotes [in the Enquirer article] are not verbatim accurate. Anyway, we’re done talking about that story, and I’ve got things to work on.”
